Graphic and video editing laptop rec.

Reizo

Hi guys!

I'm asking for a friend who needs help.

He's currently studying in a graphic design school.

His degree is in visual communication.

They're gonna use all of the Adobe suite, with Adobe Premiere for video editing.

It's his 2nd year and they will need a powerful editing laptop soon. We live in Israel so the prices around here are pretty high so it might be an option ordering it from the USA.

The budget is around 1000$, but it can be a 1300$ worth computer since there's Black Friday soon and prices might drop.

So far, I think he'll need a Spec similar to this (correct me if not):

-any i7 CPU (or high end i5)

-GTX 1060 GPU

-8GB RAM or higher (can add separately later)

-15.6 inch display

So, drop your recommendations and thoughts.

Thanks a lot! :)

An 8th gen 6-core i7 would be ideal. 8GB won't be nearly enough. Even with simple edits, I find Premiere uses somewhere around 5-6GB. 16GB is definitely needed.

GPU is less important as not all effects are GPU accelerated, in fact, lots aren't.

funny, I thought all the graphic design would be GPU accelerated

As I stated we live in Israel but will probably order from the USA.

Weight and battery life would be a nice addition but not important enough to go above budget.

About the color calibration I have no idea lol

So a good GPU would benefit more to other Adobe software?

I think you overestimate the usage of GPUs in these kinds of applications. They're never 100% utilized if it's still for educational purposes.

With good IPS panel (may require colour calibration):

Lenovo Legion Y730 15*

Lenovo Legion Y530 with 300 nits 72% NTSC 60/144Hz IPS

HP Omen 15t dc with 144Hz / UHD panel

With good 120Hz TN panel (require colour calibration):

Yep, battery and weight don't matter too much, just not something extreme.

So these are the best for the budget?

and a 1050ti will suffice for sure?

1. Yes, unless I missed out something

2. I'm not sure better GPU will help in your workload or not (I'm noob in software side things)

Sorry for bothering, could you provide links to this specific models? I couldn't find them on Amazon US

Also, could anybody shed more light on 1060 vs 1050ti when talking Adobe software (Both video and photo)

Care to explain what low sRGB means? does it mean inaccurate colors? is it critical?

Colour accuracy isn't the same with colour coverage (one of the common misconception)

Depends on your workload, it can be important. I assumed that your friend needs a good quality one

Once you get above built in graphics, GPU does not matter much. Adobe suite uses almost zero GPU for most things. This is true in photoshop, illustrator, premiere, and even some things in after effects. GPU’s are specialized for converting 3D models (like in games) into 2D images. At minimum, make sure the laptop you get has an MX150 and after that the performance gains will be basically negligible. I would expect almost 0 difference between a 1050Ti and a 1060. I think even a 1050 would get you the same performance as a 1060 in Adobe suite.
