Hello all!

I am currently looking to upgrade my CPU (+ Motherboard, + RAM). Before showing you my current setup, I have to say that I'm not one who updates my whole PC in one step, but more some parts at a time, when i feel like they need to be updated.

So my current build looks like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i5-3570K 3.4 GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($334.98 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: be quiet! - Pure Rock Slim 35.14 CFM CPU Cooler  ($27.89 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: ASRock - Z77 Pro3 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair - XMS 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR3-1333 Memory
Storage: Samsung - 840 Series 250 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: Western Digital - WD Green 2 TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($99.89 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: KFA2 - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6 GB OC Video Card
Case: Fractal Design - Define C ATX Mid Tower Case  ($91.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $554.74
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2018-11-13 11:52 EST-0500

So now I want to update the CPU, motherboard and RAM. However I can't decide which one would be good. I looking for 1080p 60Hz with the possibility to update to 1080p 144Hz within two years. I am mostly playing RB6 and X-Plane 11. So i was thinking to go with:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i5-9600K 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor  ($249.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Asus - Prime Z370-P ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($112.91 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  ($118.30 @ Amazon)
Total: $481.20
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2018-11-13 12:07 EST-0500

At a local dealer the Intel core i5-9600k would be 278,90€ ($314,76), while the 8600k is 265,90€ ($300,08). Or should I look into buying a used 6th or 7th generation?

Any help appreciated :)

Greetings

When you're asking for build suggestions, don't use US pricing. I see you included local pricing later on, which is helpful, but the other pricing is a bit misleading.

It's better to say where you live so that locals can suggest other options, retailers, etc.

r6 is cpu heavy, and you say you might upgrade in the future?

i'd say go with a cheap b350 motherboard, get yourself a ryzen5 2600x or 2600 if you want to overclock. and for ram, get 3000 or 3200mhz, brand dont matter but i recommend corsair (idk why)

I might want to get a 144Hz monitor in the foreseeable future and want the CPU be able to support maybe a 2070.

Looks good to me. Are you going to use the cpu cooler you are currently using? Because the processor doesn’t come with a stick cooler.

I was going to yes. Or should I update that one too?

X-Plane 11

Good luck getting anywhere near 144hz in x-plane with any decent graphics preset.

I would probs suggest an i7-8700 as a CPU with either 16-32gb of ram at 3000mhz depending of what your budget allows.

Oh should have mentioned that I wouldn't be looking for 144hz in x-plane. Stable 60 would definitly be enough there.

Get an 8600k, better motherboard and keep your ram

Intel's 14nm shortage has driven their prices way up. I think you'll find Ryzen's pricing a little more agreeable.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Pretty sure motherboards for 8600k don't support DDR3 ram, or am i wrong?

That is true, so if a handful of more frames per second is worth the price increase then go for it.

Yeah that won't work. There aren't any coffee lake motherboards that support DDR3.

Thanks for that advice. Definitly going to investigate the difference closer in some games that I mostly play.
