Steel and stone will be cold when you rest your hands on it, but extremely durable. Check out your local hardware stores as you can sometimes find dirt cheap offcuts/returns of granite and quartz countertop. Use PL Premium adhesive to bond it to the desk legs. You can also find workbench inlays that are wood covered in stainless steel for ~$100-$150.
Hardware stores will also carry oak and maple butcher blocks in various sizes, easy to work with (adding grommet holes), warm to the touch, and you can stain to your preferred color.
You can also buy 1 3/4" thick sheets of particle board (or double up 3/4" MDF), edge with solid wood, contact cement a formica sheet onto the top, then route a nice edge on it. Looks great, cheap, and you can make it the exact size you want.
Lastly, check out specialty office stores (not big box Office Max/Staples/etc.) for used desks or work surfaces. I don't know what kind of laminate Steelcase and Hon use, but its virtually indestructible. I use a few layered office work surfaces in my shop for a surface to beat on, tear apart carbs, etc and it takes a lot to damage them.
