Is SATA and USB passively compatible?

WolfGangMouse

Like, if I were to connect the pinouts from a sata data cable to their respective ones on a usb pinout, would they be directly compatible or will I have to go ahead and order a cable to convert it for me?

nevermind was being really stupid

No.

They're different protocols, different everything.  You need something with a chip that would convert the sata "language" to usb.

get a usb hdd rack , or whatever they're called ... hard drive enclosures says newegg  .. make sure you get the right size .. like don't go for 2.5" which will only fit SSDs and laptop hard drives, if you have a standard size hard drive.

or get one of those gadgets that sits on your desk like this one: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817986030&ignorebbr=1

SATA and USB don't even have the same number of pins.......................

Not to mention SATA requires a separate power cable......................
