How do you go about destroying your information on hard drives, usb sticks, paper records, bank cards, credit cards, old cell phones, microsd cards, sim cards.

Staples charges $1/lb of paper documents to be shredded, what a ripoff that is. The business shredders charge more because they roll up and get to work blocking traffic as usual.

All I need is a match and I know for a fact its totally destroyed, throw in the plastic cards and if you want to go dirty like Ganges/Yellow/Doce River dirty, then make a pile if its legal to do so. Could just take the platters and hammer away at it then for good measure blow torch it.

All I need destroyed are papers and plastic cards. Crap-O-Rama $1.25 lighter and flames away!

I say incinerator and free electricity!

Not practical for a busy truck operation.

With hard drives, I generally take a drill and a hammer and destroy the plates inside.

USB sticks I tend to snap in half.

Paper records get shred and picked up by a company who disposes of it.

Credit cards I cut in half and keep cutting until there is nothing left to cut.

Old cell phones I take a drill to.

MicroSD cards and sim cards I cut in half till I can't cut no more.

You can get a portable shredder for like $40.

yeah I used to do that, even the stupid receipts from the atm

yes I always look at the receipts people leave behind. I once saw a bank balance of $220k which was the account whomever took money out of. I also note the people at the bank who are getting or giving large wads of bills. I once counted the money of that one clerk was counting, came to like $20k ish, and it was a Friday evening like 7pm so they must've been hitting either the strip club or the casino or both.

I just chuck it on the bonfire

I save mine up until the large envelope is stuffed then I will light it on fire in a fire pit when I do my walk, throw some twigs in there. I love the smell of a fire pit blazing away on an evenings night, then you can sit and chug many beers and ponder life. Have to cup the can just right ;)

Common:

Paper is either burned (for heat) or shredded then recycled or composted (For landscape ornamental plants. Not really sure what all is in those inks and paper treatments).

Less common:

CDs and cards are shredded then recycled as plastic.

Rare:

Solid state media gets disassembled, memory chips destroyed, then taken to electronics recycle.

Decommissioned hard drives get disassembled, platters removed, and all recycled for metal (circuit board goes to electronics recycle)...though I do keep the magnets.

Since the non paper items are not nearly as common as the endless (and wasteful) junk mail, I can put a bit of effort in reducing what goes in the garbage can.

There's no place like ~

Lighting USB sticks on fire is a good way to get rid of it. If you don't damage the actual chip, it's still usable.

Hard drives should be smashed.

Burn the paper shredded or not.
