I wanted to see if anyone has tips and advice on how to keep data safe from users that don't exactly know what they're doing.  IE: keep the integrity of important files on a desktop that is being used by someone that doesn't know how to use a computer.  Any and all solutions will be considered.

Permissions, snapshots, and backups.

Can you elaborate on snapshot's?

Permissions sound a little to involved, the less tech I have to do the better.

Backup's you covered in my other post.

A snapshot system basically freezes the data where you take the snapshot and any new data is stored as differences from the snapshot. Data recovery is basically undoing the changes.

Permissions is the foundation of all security. If you lack a permissions system, anyone has access to the data. And it doesn't have to be involved, you can make it as simple as having two groups: admins and regular users. If you don't want regular users touching certain folders, you can set blanket permissions.

If you're talking about making sure a shared computer is safe from people not knowing what they're doing tinkering with it, make everyone else a limited permissions account. In Windows this is the Standard User account. Changing many system level settings require an admin to login. Otherwise it only harms that user account.
