i know that the r9 290 requires a required combined amp rating of 48A on the 12v rails..

im trying to figure out if this powersupply from evga will be sufficient, it has 4 12v rails each at 20A

i dont know how they 'combine' it to get there answer so any help is nice :)

everything 80+ gold 500 Watt+ will be good.

No all psus are created equal. There are a good deal of crap 1200w gold psus.

that can be false statement in reality which is why i was asking yes generally most 500W+ psus will be compatible but im trying to figure out what they mean by "combined 12v rails" equalling a min of 48v..

that is fine

just thought id check because i dont wanna stuff over my build within the first 10 mins when i finish it :o

the choice is so far between that evga 750w and this http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?e=1254531 750w silver stone strider gold evolution

ASSUMING 750w is enough for r9 290 with an i5 4670k both overclocked

With PSU's the most important things to look at is the brand and the wattage, followed somewhere behind by the power efficiency tag. EVGA is a very solid manufacturer of PSUs, 750W is comfortably enough for a full system with a single card that you plan to overclock, I'd only go higher if you want two beefy GPUs running in SLI/Crossfire.

Case: Meatbag, humanoid - APU: Human Brain version 1.53 (stock clock) - Storage: 100TB SND (Squishy Neuron Drive) - PSU: a combined 500W of Mitochondrial cells - Optical Drives: 2 Oculi, with corrective lenses.

A decent 600-650w would do. A good psu like the Seasonic 550 G would be sufficient.

I understand it would suffice but id feel better if it was 700-750 minimum :/ if you know any fully modular that are cheap and 700-750 please let me know :)

I know some but it's very unnecessary. Ignore what the graphics card's site recommends. They are highly inflated in case you're using a crap psu.

I agree and disagree with you on this one.

From a Electronics and Computer Engineering Technologist perspective, when looking at a power supply, you need to look at the voltages and currents, and how stable they are (how much distortion, noise, transients, etc). Power is a resultant of the two. With a majority of today's electronics, a steady constant DC source is important. An unsteady source with too much voltage and current spikes can actually permanently damage the devices.

Brand has very little to do on which power supply to get, as long as the unit is well-designed and well-built, and can perform to specifications. I don't care if it's Raidmax or SeaSonic, as long as it's not some BS crap unit (which ,unfortunately, isn't true for Raidmax).

The lower end EVGA power supplies are actually mediocre at best. A prime example is the EVGA 500B.

  • The OEM for this PSU is Heroichi (AKA HEC)
  • Build quality isn't great
  • Components used inside the PSU is only mediocre
  • Efficiency is well within the 80 PLUS Bronze rating, BUT the voltage ripple is pretty friggin' high (unstable voltage; especially the +12v rail)

http://www.legitreviews.com/evga-500b-500w-power-supply-review_122110

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=351

Then again, EVGA doesn't manufacturer the PSU's, they just rebrand them like Corsair (SeaSonic and CWT are the OEM behind a large portion of their PSU's).

It's correct, though, a well-built 750W - 850W unit is typically more than enough for a multi-GPU system configuration. Ideally, it would be most suitable for two high-end graphics cards. Usually, a ~550W is plenty for a single high-end card. I ran three Radeon HD 5850's with my Corsair TX850 (v1) back in the day :P .
