Best Mixed Use CPU (3D modeling, gaming, video editing, etc)

Building a new rig and I am not sure what CPU to get. I do quite a bit of 3D modeling in SolidWorks, Sketchup and Fusion 360. I also do graphics design and illustrations in Clip Studio Paint, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop. I am pretty new to video editing, but I would also like to add this to my business services once my skills get up to an acceptable level. I also game occasionally, can't wait for Fallout 76 and Doom Eternal! Max budget for a CPU is about $450

 

I am not sure to go with cores or clock speeds

EVGA GTX 1080 Ti SC2 Gaming

G.Skill 32GB DDR4 3200MHz

512GB Samsung 970 Evo NVMe

8TB WD Red

2x 32" 4K LG monitors

4K TV

Ryzen is what you're looking for right now, especially given Intel's 14nm shortage. Ryzen 7 2700X will do you quite nicely.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

 

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

 

How many watts do I need? ATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explained, group reg is bad

go with clock speed. Most of these scale badly with core count.

I'll figure out the motherboard when I choose a CPU, budget for a mobo is about $150

I want to chime in on this. Overclocking on Ryzen isn't as great as Intel. Therefore, if you can spare the cost between a 2700 and a 2700x it's better to get the 2700x rather than getting the 2700 and overclocking it.
