Rift is the best if you're going to be sitting in one place.

Vive is the best with motion tracking.

If you don't need VR, I wouldn't do it personally. If there's only a few games you'd want VR for, then it's probably worth it as long as you enjoy VR in those games.

Personally, I'd only want VR for one game and therefore wouldn't view it as worthwhile.

No, VR is just a fad and not worth it for day gamers.

Its like when 3D tv's came out, they are not around no more.

Oh the 3dTVs...... back in the days when the manufacturer has to come up with features nobody needs, *cough* HDR *cough*.

Wait, when did they come out with things they did need?

A 1070, with R5 1600. I play most of my game with a 1440p monitor.

I will straight up tell you, I had a 1070, I found it very lacking for VR...did it work? Yes. But "full-fledged" games with VR support needed to have their settings lowered a lot, to the point I didn't even wanna play em.

The thing with titles designed solely for VR is that they employ a lot of rendering shortcuts to squeeze out extra performance, think like surrounding a player with a bottomless pit.

The issue with things like Dirt Rally, Project Cars, American/Euro truck sim, and to a lesser extent Asseto Corsa they were not designed with VR in mind, they were designed for play on (comparatively) easy to run monitor at 60fps When you take those into VR, you are asking to run at a higher resolution and at a faster FPS and quite frankly I found the 1070 struggling on these kinda titles. In fact its part of the reason I got a 2080ti. I love VR especially for racers, but you do not want stutter in VR, you want VR titles pegged at 90. and th 1070 imo is just not up for the task in most games like I mentioned. I got it to work solidly in Assetto Corsa but the others I had to lower the visuals so much it defeated the point for me personally.

I wont say the 1070 cant run these titles. But I will say it will look pretty bad doing so.

Racing games like Dirt Rally, F1 and project cars are the only games that I really feel the need for VR. It makes a huge difference to be able to look into the apex before hitting it.

I saw someone on youtube be able to set up a PSVR to work with Steam. But I am not sure if it's lower-res oled is good enough to provide an immersive experience.

Really thank you for the advice, I think I am going to skip VR until I got a new GPU.

F1 doesn't work with VR, codemasters are being assholes with VR support I wont be getting Dirt Rally 2 until they support it.

But yeah dirt really was one of the titles I was struggling to get performance I was happy with, I thought id have it and than it would start stuttering again for me, same with project cars 2 (don't play PC1 in VR its VR was implemented badly cause it was more of an experiment and it looks burry as all hell.

I have a i7 7700hq + gtx1060 laptop and it's running games like beat saber, boxVR, work simulator pretty good. Tried American truck simulator and it was running smoothly.

My only advise is for you to check which headset the game is compatible with. Wanted to try Dirt 4, not VR compatible. Dirt Rally? Rift only. They are listed on the steam page on the right.

VR games are really niche. Made by small developers mostly for a small amount of people. I don't think it's going to die, but the technology isn't there yet. I guess in about 10 years it's going to be awesome or dead hahahahahah

My point is: VR is for enthusiast. For me, the selling point was Beat Saber. For you, it could be something else. My only recommendation is: don't buy it unless you tried it. Try it first and see how you like it. there are gaming conventions organized pretty much everywhere now that showcase them. Go try one and then decide if you want to buy one or not.

You can make dirt rally work on a vive with little effort.

You are right.... I think I really need to look closer into which specific game I would want to play in VR, and go try on a headset.

I really hope they would get support for VR somewhere in the future, racing (and driving) sim work naturally with VR.

I just watched the video Linus showing VR can be run with mid-spec PC.

But should I get into it? What VR is good for now? I can only think of some racing games that I would really want VR. (I am not huge into VR game) Or it is better off be just use as a HMD?

I wouldn't do it, at least not yet. Let VR technology advance a bit more before making any investments in it.

I haven't used the Vive, but I have used the Rift. Screendoor effect is definitely present, and it's hard to get a good image with the limited lens adjustment. Tracking is alright, and the controllers are decent.

Definitely needs higher resolution and higher refresh rate displays, and better optics, then it might be something I'd consider dropping some money on.

When I used my friend's Windows Mixed Reality headset, I was hooked. I got a used Rift and an RX 580 off of Ebay and threw the graphics card into my i7 3770 computer (that I got for free from a business upgrading their computers). All the games I have tried work great and I now primarily game in VR. Anyone who has tried proper VR knows that this isn't just a fad. If I were you, I would find a friend who has a Rift or a Vive (or WMR) and see how you like it.

I got Rift few months back and I really enjoy it. Its definitely not a fad as was said above.

There are some awesome games made for VR since I even got the Rift, and they are awesome.

Yes, the game selection is still very limited when compared to normal PC games and there is a lot of trash and "games" (tech demos) in the store but some of the games that are out there are absolutely worth it to get VR for.

I recommend Oculus over the Vive, but its up to you. Some of the really good VR games are Oculus exclusives (I know you can play them on Vive but the controllers dont compare, Oculus touch is imo way superior to the Vive controllers).

You can also get a full room scale with Oculus but you need 3rd sensor to buy separately or live with just 2 of them but have some occasional tracking issues.

I definitely NOT recommend you to just pick the head piece and play with a normal controller or KB and Mouse. Its not really good experience most of the time.

Awesome games:

Lone Echo

Moss

Lucky's Tale

Beat Saber

Thumper

Robo Recall

Jet Island

Onwards

Pavlov
