8700k Delid Results +20'c Drops

So I decided to delid my cpu for fun, was very easy and straight forward using the Der8auer Die Mate 2. I decided to use Thermal Grizzlys Conductonaut as the TIM that was a bit tricky to get the right amount and spread I was happy with.

I also didn't reseal the IHS on I went with the retention arm holding it in play method which seemed to have worked perfectly. I've included the results of a 5 minute aida64 stress test @5ghz before and after the delid, I am over the moon with how well it worked I recommend give it a go if you feel up to the task.

enjoy it!, I did after my delid (for a while) tbh, I wouldnt suggest anyone to delid their cpu right away, nor delid if you are using an air cooling (because its so damn hard to find the correct pressure using intels stock cpu retention mechanism), also if anyone plans to delid you dont need to use liquid metal, almost everything performs better than stock intel tim that is 6+ months old.

just use an razor blade, or piece of wood and an hammer, you dont need any fancy tools.

Make one urself then, you have the measurment required at hand. Doesnt need to be made of metal, nylon plastics are hard enough and easy to machine.

yeah I've seen the razor method and the vice method and such, but nah it seems too risky. the der8aur tool is much better for novices

there are plenty of nock off delidding tools that do the same thing the der8auer one does much cheaper, but i did my 8600k with a razor in under a minute just work the corners then the edges go quick, only use the tip of the razor not the whole blade, but do cut the edges ( all 4 ) first with the center of the blade and apply even and upward force into the IHS away from the PCB

I just spent like 15 min in sketchup slapping together a simple delid example that one could make at home themselves.

All u would need to do is to place a block the size of the side cutout in and give it a wack. idealy with a block on top aswell held insplace to make sure the CPU doesnt pop up.

I see what you mean, this is basically all the de8aur tool is without the giant bolt. I might try and make my own tool, I wonder if the de8aur and rockit tools will start dropping in price now that the TIM is soldered on the 9000 series though.. might be able to pick one up pretty cheap on ebay soon

I mean, ill always recommend a tried and tested consumer delidd tool, you know its going to work. BUT if u cant spare the cash, or just dont feel its worth the price tag, then yea ..build one urself , so long as you have some basic tools u can make one, even better if u have access to a CnC or Mill.

I doubt they will drop in price as the 9gens are still hot af and delidding them actually still helps ahah

Hi.. I'm new to overclocking, but I'm very interested to deliding a CPU, and your topic draws my attention. I think I will take my very 1st chance to delid my CPU when its warranty is expired.

My CPU is also i7 8700K.

 

I check Der8auer DDM2 on Amazon, the product details says that,

"Compatible with Intel Ivy Bridge / Haswell / Devil's Canyon / Broadwell / Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs"

 

But you clearly showed me that you delid your i7 8700K yourself with it.. So I assume that it also can delid Coffee Lake CPUs without issue. Could you or anybody here please confirm it for me?

what are you trying to overclock to and what are your temps? yes it will delid coffelake and the new coffelake refresh too.

Did you mean it's become incompatible for an air cooler if we done the deliding a CPU and then put the air cooler back on it?

Also, is it not a must to use liquid metal to replace the Intel's stock TIM? We still can use TG Kryonaut for it right?

you might be right about the price not dropping.  but I dont think delidding will be as popular anymore. the difference between soldered tim and a liquid metal job is only like 5-8 degrees now iirc from the GamersNexus video. Probably not gonna be worth it for most people and I think thats basically what Steve said too.

liquid metal is still slighty better like said above but it wont be a 20'c drop like replace intel standard thermal paste.

and yeah thermal grizzly kryonaut should be good i was going to use it till i manned up and went liquid metal haha

yea like picklestine said, its the liquid metal that was slightly better. They were able to apply a super thin layer of it (thinner than the sTIM)

I'm looking a chance to delid my CPU if the time has come, but I only use air cooler. Can I still use air cooler after delid? How much we will lose if we cant apply same pressure on the cooler as before delid? What I mean by "how much we will lose" is, is it worth to delid a CPU and stay with air cooler after done it?

you can, its just 10 times more effort. Too little pressure = straight up refuses to boot, too much pressure = I get memory issues. What I done is that, I removed intels stock mechanism modified my hyper212's screws so that I can fine tune the pressure. (just to put some context, last time I reapplied TIM, it took me 4 hours to get my system working again and it only takes 20 minutes to reapply the paste) If you plan on using a even bigger cooler, you better have a LOT of patience.

Air cooler applied pressure affect CPU to not boot and memory? How could that correlate?

I don't get what you mean by intel stock mechanism, because I didn't get intel stock cooler when I bought my CPU. My air cooler has integrated springs on its screws, does that matter?

because memory controller is on the cpu. Just delid it your cpu if you really want to. 212 evo came with screws with springs and those were not did not have enough threads to put enough pressure using my mounting thingy.

OK too much pressure will give memory issue still make sense, but why too little pressure makes it refuse to boot? 

 

Do you mean by intel stock mechanism is the CPU bracket? I thought it was the intel stock cooler mounting bracket.

How much did you get the temps drop by delid your CPU and put the 212 Evo back on it?

if my memory serves me correctly I went from 90s to high 60s, just like OP.
