dropping a hdd

i know that dropping a laptop with a hdd will damage it. but what if it is turned off? if its on, then it will cause a head crash, but when off, will it be safer?

Safer yes. The heads are parked and can withstand more impact

so if i have a backup (external) hdd, and i accidentally drop it from my table, it should be fine?

it depends a lot on what orientation it fell in, how high, a multitude of other factors. Only one way to find out: see if it's still usable.

Do you really believe that guys who deliver these drives for stores are so gently? They probably drop your HDD lot of times, then other guys in warehouses don't care so much too. At the end you drop your HDD once, what not makes any difference.

It's packaged when it's shipped, dropping it directly onto hardwood straight on the enclosure is a bit different.

Yes, I know, but anyway it's a drop. If you hit a wall inside your car, you'll be damaged, even if you're "packed" in your car.

This is like asking if your phone will be okay if you drop it.  How would we know?

i have never had a hard drive survive a fall ......price i pay for not having carpet.....even one in a external enclosure died from about a 8" drop...harder the surface it hits less chance of survival
