Water chiller... what have I ordered...

its easy to maintain liquid if you don't let it slow too much, but  most* fish still wouldn't like it too much and since its designed for that..

its the opposite of microwaving water till its super heated and watching explode when disturbed  you disturb the f out of the water and the energy required for turbulence stops crystalization, think runnign water in out door line to stop freezing in winter (from creek/well sources)

I have always wanted to do this ever since I saw a video on it forget which one (was not linus lol) but having spent so much on my water cooling and rads and such just not longer in the books. One day though.

I just had a thought... the CPU I'm intending to use this on has previously had liquid metal applied. Not sure what the exact temperature is, but it is around 10-16C, liquid metal goes solid. Guess that means I should clean it off and go back to conventional compounds?

Is that still a thing? I had a commercially produced unit 10+ years ago but didn't find it really powerful enough. Building my own would be too much effort. Next step beyond chiller is DICE.

Phase is still a thing. A bit hard to get one worth buying though.

I should have clarified, is it still an off the shelf thing? I know people have been building their own for a while, but I'm time poor so that's not really a consideration for me.

You will need to use a ceramic TIM, Thermal Grizzly do some. Kryonaut

Conductonut (liquid metal) is only recommended down to 10c. it works best at higher temps

Do you mean ceramic specifically, or just general non-liquid metal TIMs? I think the only stuff I have at home currently is a fat tube of MX-4, which in a quick search I've found a couple of references to people using for sub zero, so I should be ok.

Well, it is only liquid at non-cold temps...

MX-5 is fine to use, but if your goign so far as to use a chiller, you should really spend some money on good high end TIM like kryonaut which is designed for low temp use.

As I said, this is just first step. Got lost more other shopping to do with fittings and things. Maybe even new blocks so I can test both Intel and AMD. Haven't even taken apart the test system to set it up yet. Rated conductivity of Kyronaut is ball park 50% higher than MX-4 so will be interesting. However Kryonaut is only rated to -250C so I can't use liquid helium on it. Disappointing.

Ordered a tube from Amazon for next day. If it comes early enough I'll use it when setting up tomorrow but I'm really itching to get testing

 

It will be no small job to take apart the existing watercooled system anyway...

You can buy them "off the shelf" but most of them are those small, kind of rubbish LD cooling integrated-into-a-case thing. Won't be able to cool much worth running. 

 

@Jumper118 has a fairly big phase unit. Big, loud and goes nice and cold.

 

Thinking about it more, chilled would probably be worth it more than scouring through second hand sites to get phase. Is a bit easier to get and set up I think.

i have no idea  someone had it in a shed and they dropped some brown fence paint on it. works ok, compressor runs a bit toasty though, bout 105 C XD

Just getting started... need to install GPU driver as had to switch cards then I'll start overclocking. Probably should add a fan for the VRMs at some point...

 

In case anyone is wondering why the board is that way up, that is my anti-condensation precaution. If any forms I hope it'll drip off before it does anything else.

heard something that made sense the other day.   add in some blue towels if you got em,and  just think about if the water could run down the tube to some where else too.   but adding air flow also helps with this too, dont need a Delta like Linus uses though

What if the PC is in mineral oil but still liquid cooled? Condensation wouldn't matter because there is no liquid in the air as there is no air

If the oil is open to air, and it gets cooled too, water could condense onto it and go... who knows where. Oil sounds far too messy for me, so not really a consideration.

The only thing down from the tube is the wood floor. It's already ruined from spills when I was more active in fishkeeping, so a little chilled water isn't going to make things worse.

hopefully the water would float/sink depending on displacement properties.
