Questions about Windows 10

Hello, so I've been building a PC and I need windows 10.

The local shops I'm buying parts for only sell windows 10 on a dvd, and I don't plan to install a DVD reader in the computer.

I live in Singapore, and the microsoft store for singapore says windows 10 is ~$195usd, which is a total ripoff

Can I just buy windows on the US store, where it is $139?

Also, when I buy the digital version of windows on the microsoft store, does it just give me a product key, or does it help me download it or something?

Thanks in advance

You can create a USB boot drive to install windows 10 (using creation media - check their site) and you can use it without having to activate it.

If you want to activate it then you can go to a grey market site (kinguin, for example) and buy an activation code.

Microsoft has their own tool to download the files and create installation media for you, it's called the Media Creation Tool.

For a key, buy one from the grey market.

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

You can download it from their site, either directly or indirectly for free.  You just need a key to activate it.  I'm not sure if the US one would activate for you... it's likely that it would, but technically that's not so different from piracy as different versions are intended for different regions and only those regions.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Not really willing to go to sites like kinguin. Heard people receiving used keys.

If I were to purchase windows 10 from the microsoft store(for my region), it would give me a product key right? Then I just activate it when booting from the usb drive that created?

I think proper answer is - YES, you can buy DVD version and install Windows using Media Creation Tool from Microsoft website. You don't must use installation media.

Can't go for DVD version, I don't plan to get a dvd reader for the PC

You don't need an activation/product key to install windows 10 and you can use that without ever activating it (I did that for a few months), but the drawback being some features would be locked.

Type "windows 10 iso" in google and go to their site (microsoft) and download the media creation tool, use that to create a USB boot drive and use said USB to install windows into your PC. When you reach the installation screen, one of pages will ask for a product key, just choose later or "I don't have one" or something like that, then continue the installation as normal.

You can find product keys on their own (without the a DVD) ask for that.

You don't must have DVD reader. You buy it for licese code, not for DVD. You may install from USB (created by Microsoft tool) even if you buy DVD version.

So if I were to buy the DVD version, it comes with a product key?

Oh, sorry I'm not very knowledgable in this... the DVD is just for the media creation tool that can be replaced by using a USB drive?

The USB boot drive does the same thing as the DVD, it installs windows.

Just look at tutorials on YouTube, heard it's a great site for this sort of thing

Nah. Just set the dvd on fire. Plug in a USB, run Media creation tool and create a bootable drive. Then boot from it and install.

You cannot put DVD on fire, it may be against the law (ecology). Even if not, it may be not good for your health. :)

Existing is bad for your health these days. And trust me, anything can burn, even water :P

They are not region locked. But actually buying from US site might prove to be issue. Those usually either check geolocation of user or billing address.
