Hey Guys, i am having quite a lot of issues with my rig at the moment.

I'm running a 4790k on a Asus Hero Vii motherboard just updated to the newest driver (as part of my own troubleshooting)

I am running it at stock speed at the moment but even at stock speed if i run Prime95 small fft my CPU goes from 35-40 with no load to about 80 and after a minute or 2 it goes to 100 and shuts down with a BSOD Clock_watchdog

It's on a Noctua nh-d14, windows 10 and i have ofc. Updated all drivers i can think off. i even did a clean windows install to no avail.

i can disable turbo on it so its stuck on 3.9ghz and lock in the voltage at 1.000. And then the cooler keeps it at about 60 degrees c.

I have also re-applied new thermal paste.

I hope you guys have an idear because im at a loss.

Hmmmm... even my 8600K at 5GHz "only" hits 82C or so under max load with an NH-D15S, yours shouldn't be hitting 100C at stock clocks. What thermal paste did you use, and did you make sure the cooler is pretty snug? If your D14 has screws with springs on them like the D15S, you want to tighten the screws till those are almost fully compressed so you get good contact.

Make sure to tighten the cooler gradually and evenly as opposed to one side before the other when reseating.

Hmm still overheats like it's no one's business. Im gonna buy a new cooler (buying a h115i) tomorrow and crossing my fingers that that will sove the problem. If not I have no idear what to do

Are you sure that the cooler is mounted properly? All of the screws should be fully tightened and not just the final 2 on the heatsink. Your temps are abnormally high and the problem probably isn't that the cooler isn't powerful enough unless it's been damaged to the point where the heatpipes have been punctured or it can't be mounted properly.

Are you overheating with any other software than Prime95? That software has had issues with latest Intel chips, and overall isn't that good for checking OC stability anymore. Some still think it as "golden standard", but youtubers have moved to Aida64 and OCCT for stability testing. Both have shown to treat CPUs more fair than P95.

yer sadly im out of trail on Aida but i tryed OCCT and that seems fine. Still hotter than what i were expecting but nowere near p95 temps

i get about 80c with small data sets

4th Gen was notorious for bad TIM.

Have you had these problems before or did it start recently? Your cooler (if mounted correctly) should be plenty for any overclock.

Also remember P95 small FFTs is as hot as you're going to get. It's an unrealistic load and my 4770 with an undervolt also hits like 83C with a 240mm cooler

That's an F in the profile pic

Any reason you care about Aida temps or anything like that running stock settings?

The chip runs hot period, if it isn’t crashing with real loads, I wouldn’t worry about it.

So is it hitting the same temp being dropped down in speed and voltage?

when loading the game anyway. Think tjmax was 105 on that chip. Is it stable after doing all that?

well i do get bsod's and crashes and the only reason i can find is heat from the cpu :( as i said it happens when loading maps in BF1 and V in the beta

CPU wouldn't heat up during those times. Do you get those with stock clocks also or only when OC'd?
