How important do you think it is to learn how to use and develop AI as a computer scientist? Would it be stupid to only learn the theory and implement preexisting tools and libraries or should someone learn from the ground up how to actually write and interpret everything? I know there are 7 figure salaries associated with having extensive knowledge in AI right now and companies can't find enough people with that knowledge.

My opinion in this question build your own AI (I it will take 6-7+(depending on your skills so lets add 5+ years) years to develop fully thinkable machine), using existing libraries in some cases it will speed you up, but in others drastically slow you down, but if you plan go with AI well go and learn google, amazon has basic libraries for ai. I have been asking myself the exact same question but it is not of immediate concern as I am just at the beginning of my computer science journey.

I know that there are whole master degrees in Europe that focus on artificial intelligence.

It obviously depends what specific field you want to go into, but at least learn the theory and then you can learn the specifics as you need to for a job

Depends on what you do.

If you just want to make something, then it's pretty much: 

import numpy as np
import tensorflow as tf

You'll be able to create your own machine learning models just fine, but you won't go very far in an interview. As for writing everything, no. No one actually writes their own matrix multiplications, the furthest someone will go is manual back-prop, which is already pretty rare considering the abundance of libraries like TF and Keras.

 

As for the high salaries, you'll need a phd for that.

Very math heavy but also the lack of knowledge as most right now who know it in depth have doctorate degrees as technology to enable such performance is very recent.

You don't have to be specially smart to get into AI, believe me. The reason not many people are in the field is because it is a relatively new field. Over here a lot of people are getting into it now that the programs are a little mature and there is a lot of demand for it.

Maybe for the absolute top salaries, but to make a decent living in AI a bachelors or masters will do just fine.

 

@BuckGup You don't need to be able to write everything yourself, pretty much every company uses TensorFlow, PyTorch or Caffe which all have a bunch of stuff to make your live easier. However it does help to know about the fundamentals, since it will give you more insight into why you would use a certain model, or why what you are trying isn't working as intended. There are some good books that can help you with implementation using python, scikit and tensorflow. Also there is a free course somewhere, I believe also on Youtube, by Andrew Ng. This is a very nice starting point in Machine Learning (though it may count on you having some knowledge about probability theory and linear algebra).

Anyway I would at least look at some Youtube videos to see whether you can follow it, and otherwise your education as Data Scientist should get you there.

Extraordinary so. I tried to get into it before because the idea of it is fun and interesting and I'm already an experienced professional programmer. But I was just hit with a pile of boring and tedious statistics math.
