October 4th Nvidia Update - Lowers performance

reptileexperts

The latest nvidia / windows updates seem to cause a hit in performance on the RTX series cards, and from initial observation it changes the performance of 10 series as well. The drivers and windows update are for implementing the ray tracing in the near future (partly). The cost, however, is 10% loss in frame rates and benchmark scores. The cause - incompatibility with certain over clocking software, the card does NOT boost as it should and the memory downclocks to factory.

I updated EVGA Precision X1 and was able to get my overclock back to "normal" levels, but performance is still 5% shy of where it was in benchmarks and real world testing. Running the Forza Horizon 4 benchmark, the CPU scores remain consistent with previous results, but GPU scores fell by 5 frames on everything (average, min, max).

Just a fair warning for folks.

incoming tech linked title: NVIDIA is lowering YOUR performance?!

More like "Nvidia takes note from Apple and starts outdating its own hardware??"

I don't understand why the implementation of future Raytracing in specific applications would have any impact on current applications.

That's an F in the profile pic

There was a decent article about it I read this morning that has to do with Direct X being a major part of the change. Superposition went from scoring 7500 down to 6700 as another reference.

All those apple rumors about them pushing poor performing OS updates onto older devices to make them sluggish in order to encourage upgrading

yes. It's more of a stab at a joke, Nvidia isn't doing it either - they still support driver updates for the 6 and 7 series... and the iPhone 6s plus is still the most recommended iPhone

Then dont use the new driver. Simple. Not like I have any RTX cards anyway.

the apple joke aside - not part of the argument - at all.

Just giving folks information on new drivers - I use an RTX-2080 and a GTX-1080 - both were severely effected unfortunately. On the 1080 I backed the drivers to the previous, on the 2080 I'm keeping them as is for the time being since I keep the system fully up to date. Folks who haven't updated, probably shouldnt. That being said I'm working on AC benchmarks, part of the reason I'm keeping it to recent driver releases.

Shadow of the tomb raider took a 5% hit as well and had a 500mb patch that coincided with the windows update.
