Can an SSD Boost speed of an Old System.

Meet8939

Hello, I have a pretty old system. My Specs are as follows:

  • CPU: Intel Pentium E5300 at 2.6Ghz
  • RAM: 3GB DDR2 at 668 Mhz

Hard drive: 256GB 7200RPMPleaseSSD addition to it to just take a step ahead and get little snappier. I have heard from a lot of YouTubers video that adding an SSD to an Old System could significantly speed it up, but I am not sure that it applies to such an old system. Please can anyone help.

Yes, boot times and load times of anything on the drive will be faster.  Games and apps will not run better, just load faster.

Yeah, take any ancient system and slap an SSD in there, you'll basically get absolute night and day difference, no joke. I upgraded an old athlon x2 system that had a 320 gb hard drive, the user was so amazed by how fast the upgrade made it even though it was over SATA ii. The SSD is the ultimate PC upgrade for old systems.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Pls note that you will be limited to 3gbps on the SATA bus so the SSD won't reach its full potential

What about loading Chrome, File Explorer and other things. And also in my Computer, there is no port for 6Gbs for the SSD I choose it just has 3Gbs ports so will it work properly with it.

There are even ssds over the IDE interface, though they are rare and expensive as well, but they do work, and I"ve done it some some ancient single-core pentium M laptops and it's made a world of difference.

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

How slow will it get on the 3Gbs port, I am asking about an assumption like 60%, 70%.

I would say it's still worth it, even over SATA2.

Yes, file explorer, Chrome etc will be faster.

Yes, you will feel alot more responsive.

At least when loading many tabs in chrome, as chrome will move inactive tabs to the hdd to clear the memory (assuming you have low memory).

For youtube rendering, i suggest you upgrade to a quad core like q6600 or a better gpu.

Core 2 quad is very cheap right now, under $20.

I was planning to Upgrade it slowly to Ryzen 5 1600 and RX 580 8GB Graphic card with RAM of 16 GB.

solid plan, but i would choose a 2600 for the improvement and little more price. also you might want to wait for 600 series

Your load times will experience a world of difference.  If this is your first SSD cherry pop you will have a read/write-gasm.

True, even a single core system running windows 7 will almost feel like a  recent PC with an SSD, from experience.

Im old...so I don't replace things until they...well, need fully replaced.  I had heard plenty, and read plenty about SSD's but I was like..."my rotary smart phone still gets internet you chillrens!"

Then in 2017 I had an HDD failure and saw the prices (never followed them) and I was like...why not.  Now the real question for myself was, why did I junk 2 perfectly fine Phenom 1090t systems right before purchasing that SSD - an SSD would have breathed INCREDIBLE life into those old systems and could have turned them around for a small amount of coin!

I do this with clients from time to time. When their hard drive is failing I offer a SSD upgrade on their older system. The performance is night and day.

Also, I have run an SSD in my old IBM T43 (uses an IDE 2.5 to msata adapter in the 2.5" slot). Works like a charm. Machine is very responsive even with an old Pentium M 1.86GHz processor.

I'm the same way (and I'm probably way older than you).

You'll lose 50% of the bandwidth compared to 6Gb/sec. 300MB/sec vs 600MB/sec

True that. The difference between 6.0Gbps and 3.0Gbps on an SSD is not all that noticeable and, even at 3.0Gbps, an SSD will still very noticeably improve performance oe the best HDDs.

Yep. Any old system I put an SSD in including my Old 2008 MacBook Pro 15" runs like a champ. Very snappy, fast boot times and overall just a much better experience. I think my MBP has a boot time of 11 seconds on a C2D. Pretty good if you ask me.
