Hi there!

First post here =)

I couldnt find this info anywhere...

So I built a 2990wx workstation, using a win 10 pro license I previously had. As far as I can see, linux is a lot better at handling those cores, and performance is way higher, unfortunately, I am bound to windows for a lot of reasons.

So I saw windows 10 pro for workstations, and from what microsoft tells, it should be better at handling more cores, but I did not find any comparisons and I am reluctant to drop a lot of money for it without any real world info.

Did anyone try it? Does it really improve multi-core performance?

I don't see why they'd improve multi core performance for a Workstation version of Win10 but not the standard Win10.

I don't have experience with the thing but I can't think of a good reason for it to be true.

Can you not outsource your computational tasks to a Linux machine but do the work on a win pc?

I have no detailed knowledge on this but I heard there was some optimization issues with Windows 10 home/pro just not being able to handle that many cores efficiently. At some point Microsoft may or will roll out some updates that will smooth out the issues that are being cause.

Alternatively, using a server version if windows like Windows server 2016 which revolves around utilizing high core count processors you may have better luck.

But personally if you can find the software equivalents you need I'd rather just switch to Linux.

Hi there!

Thanks all, u guys are awesome!

Disabling core 0 improves performance here and there, really odd.

I cant switch to linux, as I extensively use Adobe softwares, and I developed a directx shader for maya that is an essential part of my 3D lookdev workflow. I could port it for openGL or vulkan, as I once did before, but stabillity was really not very nice on linux.

Also I cannot offload processing to a linux machine, as I only have this one xD

Seems like I will have to wait. The pc is really fast at rendering, and is not causing me a lot of headaches, only some minor freezes here and there, that I think is normal for a CPU this young.

I was mostly curious, as microsoft says that its workstation version of windows is better at heavily multithreaded applications, its just not clear if its better at multiple (support) physical CPUs, or if its better at core management.

Maybe someone will do some tests someday, I am just not confortable paying for a software that may not do anything for me and maybe even introduce some more bugs.
