What do you need for a PC

Hello I have been looking into building a gaming PC, BUT i don't have a lot of money to get top of the line components. so i was wondering what reasonably priced components i could get to run most games and VR with ease. i don't care if it can't run a lot of games just VR. I am (if i can get a pc for vr) getting a htc vive and have enough money to get one. so if you can give me recommendations that would be great.

VR is really demanding, you'll need to save up and get mid range parts to pull it off. Budget?

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

 

How many watts do I need? ATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explained, group reg is bad

VR Runs great on my laptop which has a 6700hq and 1060 6gb.

 

So if you can match that then you're golden. Though I'd definitely aim for a 1070 or better. 

 

My desktop runs VR exponentially better than my laptop via the 1070 in it.

980 and 1060 is around the minimum for VR.

i would recommend an i5 8500 or better with and gtx 1060 or better, even tho some "lower" end parts have "good vr experience" badge thingy if you want a pc mainly for vr get as i said or better.

That's shooting pretty high, even a 970 will deliver a good vr experience, and that's was actually the reason I bought one a couple years back. A 1060 and up will do quite well.

True, but OP hasn't even posted a budget yet, and from the way the question was worded, the low-end spec was more in mind. Practically speaking, I consider 970 bare minimum, with a used 1070 probably being the best value for a good VR experience

Quite a lot. You can fit an i5 8600k in there, 16gb ddr4, a z370 motherboard, gtx 1070, and a nice big SSD and hard drive no sweat

That would be a first. Prices have stayed the same for graphics cards as long as I can remember. There even less likely to now, considering the RTX price hike.

Yeah you're fine. Get an i5, 1060 6gb or 1070. 
Any motherboard compatible with the i5 will be fine & then 8-16 gigabytes will do fine. 

You can get an SSD but Hard Drives are fine if you don't mind waiting 10~ seconds more for the computer to turn on.

do not under estimate the speed and importance of SSD, it may take 4-5 mins for a trad hard drive to boot to a workable startup while SSD takes less than 30sec.

If your HDD takes 4-5 minutes to startup you probably installed too much bloatware. 

 

I found it takes about 30 seconds to 1 minute for windows 10 to startup with steam as a startup application. Not a major inconvenience. All my games are installed on my HDD & I don't find myself waiting for very long. My current boot drive is an SSD but it used to be an HDD. Then again I usually turn on my computer, go get a drink & when I get back, my computer is sufficiently on with Windows 10, a 2012 i5 & 12~ GB of ram. 
This video shows the HDD taking about 2 minutes to boot where an SSD boots in 30 seconds, so you're right but to me it doesn't matter that much. Maybe it's just personal preference. I'm not too eager for PC startup times & if I'm going to have to wait, I might as well walk away & the timing doesn't matter for me.

To OP, if you only get 1 drive & it ends up being a hard drive, learn about the task manager & startup applications so your startup is not prolonged that much.

Thank you i am about to order the parts i ended up getting a intel i5 8600k in with 16gb ddr4 a z370 motherboard, and a evga gtx 1070 (i found a deal on it)  ssd is a Samsung 860 EVO 1TB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E1T0B/AM), the case i got is a nzxt s340 matte black, the power supply is a Corsair CX Series 750 Watt Modular Power Supply it all adds up to just above $1000 i haven't ordered it yet just in case there is anything missing. if there is anything missing tell me, or if anything i need to change that can help me tell me.

Nice! I have a rig rn with an i5 8600K in it, that CPU is an absolute beast and overclocking to 5GHz was easy on my ASUS Prime Z370-A. Very good gaming CPU and apparently it handles streaming just fine, though I haven't tried that with it yet.

Building a custom desktop capable of playing VR decently is more expensive than you think. 

According to the Vive website, a Vive set costs $500 MSRP. A laptop that would be VR capable costs around $800 bare minimum. A prebuilt desktop that's VR capable would be around $900 - $1000, but peripheral costs could bring it up to near $1100. A custom VR PC would likely be around the same cost as a pre-built. You could possibly undercut some costs, but it would just depend on what you can find. Plus, you have to add $500 for a Vive onto any PC pricetag
