So I've just built my brand new first build, and the mobo audio jacks don't work. I've called gigabyte and they said the only option is to RMA it or use the 30 day warranty microcenter gives.

Well I'm  going to take it to microcenter. To replace the mobo, should I leave everything else there (all of the cables routed the same way and stuff) or totally take it all apart. And will I need to apply thermal paste to the CPU when I put it in th new one (I'm using the stock cooler so it came preapplied.)

Also, would it be beneficial to pay an extra ~$20 and upgrade to a 990fx. The one I have now is the Gigabyte GA 970A-UD3P. Would my current mobo allow me to overclock decently? (8+2 powerphase.)

Thanks for the help.

first of all, have you installed the audio drivers?

also to rma a board, everything that came in the box has to be included, so you might need to tear it all appart.

you should always reapply thermal paste when you mount/remount a cooler, so yes.

depends on your cpu and how much you plan to oc and utilize the 990 features, usually a 970 board like yours is just fine.

I would just leave the cables there, and then move them around if necessary when you get the new motherboard. And it is quite likely that you'll have to reapply, because you have to take the cooler off and the CPU out, thereby separating the CPU and the cooler. Your motherboard may allow you to overclock, but it really doesn't matter. If you're going to have to reapply the thermal paste anyways, I would spend the $20 on a Hyper 212 Plus cooler if you want to have any hope at all of overclocking.

To be honest beside the audio jack mishap, I'm fine with it. I'm not the best judge though because I've only had it for a couple weeks. As far as the specs go I think it's the best option for the price.

Without a doubt. The 990 boards are better boards compared to their 970 counterparts.
