Hello, people of the internet!

My PC has an i3 6100 on a Gigabyte B150M-DS3H motherboard. Paired with an R9 280x, 16GB RAM and 750W PSU. I want to upgrade the CPU to allow me run CPU intensive games like Cities : Skylines, GTA V, CS:GO, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Obviously, I won't be able to do much overclocking on this motherboard.

Keeping all this info in mind, what should I purchase? I can sell my i3 for 100-150$ and I can spend another 100-150$ from my pocket. Your answers and required and appriciated!

Thanks!

If you sell your i3 for what you want, you should easily be able to afford an i7 6700 which will benefit you greatly in those games.

You are NOT getting $100 for that i3. You can get a nearly equivalent CFL Pentium or Athlon GE for $50-60.

My bad! :P I'll factor that in. So? 6700 it is? What if I want an i5? Which one should be picked?

IMO, unless you get a screaming deal on an i5 that works with your board (under $100), there isn't one worth buying. The Ryzen 5 and i7-6700 are much better choices.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

6700 or 7700.

I'm just going to highlight some that would be good upgrades.

Any Sky Lake i5 or i7: Good, but only if you get a good deal.

Any Kaby Lake i5 or i7: See above.

Any Coffee Lake i5 or i7: Not a different socket, but incompatible. Unless you want to get a new motherboard too, don't bother.

Ryzen: Again, new motherboard.

Any used 6th or 7th i5 or i7 in your area?  You could go that route to keep costs down.

GPU: TNT2 M64 / Radeon 9000 / MX 440-SE / 7300GT / Radeon 4670 / GTS 250 / Radeon 7950 / 660 Ti
