what do you mean by FTL? is it an acronym for traveling at light speed? faster than light?

FTL is the accepted shorthand for "Faster than light" - specifically referring to propulsion systems that exceed the speed of light in a vacuum.

I think the most realistic chance for FTL tech is probably the Alcubierre drive - which is somewhat similar to Star Trek's Warp Speed.

That's assuming there aren't naturally occurring stable wormholes.

The problem with FTL is the excessive energy needed to maintain the speed of light. It's damn near impossible, under current understanding, to travel even half that speed with any form of tech.

Don't count on wormholes either, the result of folding that much space time would kill you a multitude of times over, even in a ship like what's depicted in Star Trek.

You're talking about using relativistic technology - eg: simply accelerating a rocket drive to, say, 50% c. Using this model, it's actually impossible to accelerate to c, because you need infinite energy. You could get to .99 c if you had near limitless energy (eg: singularity reactors, anti-matter, zero point energy, etc), but even that's not practical.

No, I'm talking about space warping, which would be the Alcubierre drive.

There are models in which we could power a Alcubierre drive using realistic levels of anti-matter.

That's entirely speculation. We don't know what the effects (if any) would be, and whether any sort of shielding would be required (or possible).

And even if what you say is true, it would still allow us to use unmanned probes and other autonomous spacecraft to travel through to the other end.

Could be, but who knows. Certainly not us. Most of us aren't able to comprehend such things.

I believe 100% that there's alien life. I mean, even the whole Roswell thing and the technological advancement we saw after is an interesting thing to get into.

I just think most of mankind can't handle it. They'll slowly try and get us to accept it through media.

On 9/11/2018 at 1:33 PM, Raskolnikov said:

They more than likely don't want anything to do with us. See the reply to fpo below. We're dirty beings. Plus, we'd try and kill or conquer whatever we came across, because we're a violent species. Really, if anything, alien life would likely want to confine us to our planet until we have become more civilized.

True, and I agree. But consider that the earth is really only like 4.5 billion years old. What happened on earth was essentially inevitable, given the environment, circumstances and factors.

Had another solar system form say, 8 or 10 billion years ago, with similar factors, it’s certainly possible that other intelligent species evolved earlier than hominids did.

In our galaxy, I would actually be surprised if we were the first species to evolve to this level. Maybe they went extinct by now, but I would find it surprising if we were the farthest along.

100% agree with this. Mankind has been alive for but a blink of what the planet has. I wouldn't be surprised if there was once life on all of the planets in our solar system at one point or another.

On 9/12/2018 at 10:37 AM, dalekphalm said:

Agreed.

That means a massive 25% of planets, on average, are in the habitable zone.

I think the whole "habitable zone" is BS. That's based on what we think life needs to survive. Who's to say that there isn't a life form that evolved differently, and doesn't require oxygen to live? Or breathes something else? We put too much emphasis on thinking we're the only way life can be.

its not aliens unless we cant find anything else that could explain it and the second source already called out a neutron star as a possible candidate so while not as fun perhaps id rather ask "is it a neutron star?"

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Modern humans are maybe a few hundred thousand years old. Hominids only a couple of million.

Even if a planet formed only 500 million years before earth, with a similar environment, could produce aliens far beyond what we understand.

500 million years is a blink, galacticly speaking, but it could be the difference between being in the Stone Age vs having conquered FTL and gravity waves.

I agree that there must be life out there not carbon based, or that otherwise works on different rules compared to earth life.

However, the habitable zone is about liquid water, which we know is crucial for all life we know of so far.

That is not to say other life can’t exist, but rather just that the 25% habitable zone is the *worst case* scenario.
