Paying $200 extra for the GTX 1080TI, bargain?

I'm about to buy the GTX 1080, but am a little torn right now.

So the average GTX 1080 is around $800AUD whilst the average GTX1080TI is around $1100-1300AUD.

The GTX 1080 should be more than enough for my gaming, as I don't play as much as I used to anymore, but recently, the ASUS Turbo 1080TI has gone down to $999AUD.

Do yall think this is a pretty good bargain and I should opt for it instead for a longer lifespan/future proof?

An extra $200 wouldn't break the bank for me obviously(considering GPUS are already a shit load) but I just wanna know if the performance difference is worth it considering it's much cheaper now.

BTW I'm on a 1440p monitor, and I'm not to keen on the RTX right now considering it has such bad insights from reviewers, benchmarks, and a pretty shit price as well lol

If you want to future-proof, wait out for actual reviews to come out for RTX cards.

Don't buy the Turbo, it's a poor blower design.

As someone who uses a 1080, honestly I dont see any point in paying the extra $200. I use it on a triple monitor setup and it works perfectly

Ti version is quite a bit faster.  No sense cheaping out when it will probably last a year or more longer before you'll feel compelled to replace.

Sounds dope, do you use it on a 1440p or 1080p setup? And can you max out most of your games on ultra or at least high?

I honestly don't understand people who want to buy a GPU this month while the RTX is on the edge of being released.

Just wait a couple of days untill we know about the RTX. When the RTX are on the shelves for a few weeks the prices of 1080 and 1080ti will drop way more than now.

It's like the cheapest built 1080 Ti out there. The plastic shroud looks like junk, and it performs accordingly. The Founders Edition is at least has the magnesium alloy cooler that looks nice and performs fine when kicked to 4500 RPM. Don't look at Newegg (or w/e) reviews, those people are clueless. You want an open 2 or 3 fan design cooler with that card.

3 weeks does not equal couple of days.

If OP needs PC soon, waiting for RTX reviews is not an option.

@subrooz I'd get the 1080 Ti Turbo only if I were planning on replacing the stock cooler.
Hell, that's what I did with my 1080 Turbo.

It'll probably be alot longer before it's actually in stock for the average buyer, obviously if I didn't need this PC urgently I'd opt to wait, but I do need it now. Timing was unfortunate in my case, but the RTX isn't looking too good regardless.

Finally someone understands haha, I need it asap since I'm using this PC mainly for Uni and Music Production so I can start working on my projects much easier and quicker, waiting a few weeks or more for an out of stock GPU might set me back real hard.

I'll look into a cooler for the turbo and see if it's overall worth, ty for the recommendation.

1080 144hz, I can max out on pretty much all my games, there are some that I have to dial it down but all the main AAA games rn work fine

Like most people are saying I would try to wait for the 2000 series launch, however if you can't then I'd take a look at some benchmarks. 1440p gives the 1080 Ti a decent boost over the 1080, but it depends on what settings you like to play with. If you're all about max settings, anti-aliasing, and other fancy bells and whistles then perhaps the 1080 Ti would be a better choice. If you can settle with lower or no anti aliasing (for newer games) and playing a good amount of games mostly maxed out with some that might have to have some tweaks, then the 1080 should do just fine at 1440p.

Really your best bet is to take a look at the specific games you're looking to play. Plenty of gameplay videos on youtube, and you can checkout reviews of the 1080 Ti since the 1080 is most likely going to be shown as well.

You could also check for used 1080 Ti's that are still under warranty and might find a significant discount. Not sure about your area, but in the US used 1080 Ti's are selling for as low as $520 USD.

seeing as you don't have the card yet and 20xx is coming out, just wait.

if you really can't wait, get the 1080 ti, that will retain most of its value even after the 20xx launches. Whatever you do, DON'T get the 1080.

You'd be doing retailers a favor as they have SOOOO many 10xx on their hands right now from the cryptobust (especially asus and msi).

The cooler is the worst of the blower designs, nothing wrong with the card itself. IMHO the only reason to by the turbo version is to use a nzxt g12 kit and a aio on it.

That being said, unless you need a gpu TODAY, wait for RTXs to launch and look at the reviews and possibly prices of 10-series cards go down. After the launch seconhand 1080TIs might get alot cheaper.

there are multiple reports of what nvidia's been doing before the 20xx release.

the ramped up production early for the 10xx so they can start the 20xx production early. Then crypto crashed and they were stuck with all those 10xx cards. Nvidia then bundled the contract for the 10xx and 20xx to force EVGA, Asus and MSI to take on the 10xx stockpile that no-one wants just to sell the 20xx. EVGA, and maybe Asus should be doing better than MSI.

It's rumored that Nvidia has stockpiled 1.5m~ 20xx for release, performance (10-15% over the 1080 ti, 30fps ray-tracing) doesn't even matter if they are pre-ordered, right now it's looking like a hit-and-run on the 20 series and it's frankly amusing.

This being said, I still expect the 1080 ti to sell out around 600 usd. No idea about the 1080. As for value retention, the Ti should keep its value better than the 1080 (just compare the price of a used 980 and a ti on ebay)
