Samsung 860 Evo 500gb vs 970 Evo 250gb

Nicholas Blair

Hi there,

I am wanting to build my first computer. I'm not sure if I should go for the 500gb Samsung 860 Evo (520 MB/s write) OR the 250gb Samsung 970 Evo (2500 MB/s write). They both cost about the same. I also want to pair it with a 2 TB WD Blue hard drive. If I'd go for the 970 Evo, I would use Primocash to accelerate my HDD. What would make more sense? High capacity and relatively slow speeds, or lower capacity and super fast speeds?

Thanks for your help!

If you are primarily using the PC for gaming, surfing and other day to day tasks then you won't notice the difference between these 2 drives.  The 970s extra speed is only realized when moving HUGE files around from drive to drive.

I'd probably go with the 860, unless you have a use case for the 970.

The 860 evo is not slow at all. I had an 850 Evo (previous gen and slower IIRC) and that thing was freaking blazing. The 970 is boasting such high read/writes becuase it's NVMe. You'll only get those speeds on massive files when video editing or something (we're talking 20GB+ single file sizes). For lots of small files like games and the OS uses, there's not much of a difference, and twice the capacity on the 860 Evo is waaaaay better than the possible speed gains on specific file sizes with the 970.
