So i have a pc with an i5 8400 which i bought recently, And i am having problems with it, My cpu was hitting 100c within minutes of launching and playing any games so i reapplied thermal paste and undervolted the cpu which got me 70-80c

in games like gta 5 and NFS payback on ultra settings after around an hour, which i think is ok? but im still getting 100c on stress tests like aida64 and prime95 though only when i check the "stress FPU" and "stress cache" if i only choose stress cpu temps hover around 85c. I really have no idea what the problem could be, It's really hot where i live so maybe that plays into it but i don't think that causes it to get that hot, Could it be a motherboard or processor error? Also i am using the stock cooler and idle temps are 38-45 degrees.

The stock cooler is likely your whole problem, but out of curiosity what did you under volt your CPU to? My 8700K was fine at 1.150V @ 4.5GHz, I would imagine that a 8400 @ 4.0GHz could go much lower, maybe even 1.000V.

Hot environment or bad case airflow I suppose? Intel's stock cooler suck, but not that bad on the 8400.

Indeed, its only the 8700 i know that suffers from overheating on the included cooler

OP what is your ambient temps?

I undervolted by -0.145v because with -0.150v my pc crashed.

I don't know exactly but probably like 32c+ not sure might actually be higher. And also i'm planning gto get another cooler It's a very old one, The AMA Phantom it's like really old but where i live there's not many options really so i am wondering if it'll get the job done, I'm not sure if it would even fit on my b360 board, I just found a great deal about it please give me your opinions.

What does that mean in actual voltages? Just setting it to manual should have done it. Also, please don't use stress tests with stock cooler. Its not made for that.

Thats higher than what is considered normal (~25C) in any tests you see on coolers. Its still not so high that it should go that high on stock cooler. What case and airflow setup is like?

That should be as good as budget 120mm coolers. It also should have mounting for LGA115x (specs read LGA1366 and LGA1156).

Yes, the AMA Phantom fits and should be plenty for cooling.

This is without undervolting so i guess it was a cooler problem afterall

The problem isn't necessarily the cooler just because a larger cooler performs better. Lowering the core voltage would still lower temps.
