Like what the title says, does every CPU with the same socket compatible with all motherboards with the same socket like an I7 6700, it an LGA 1151, is it compatible with ALL 1151 motherboards or do I have to match CPU to mobo chipset like h110 or whatever there is??? coz I just might upgrade my i5 6400 to any 6th gen I7, but im not really sure if all 1151 CPUs even 7th gen 1151 or 8th if there are any compatible with my 1151 h110 mobo? or does the chipset matter as well?

Generally speaking: Yes. However sometimes it's not (like with the 2011 socket and the Xeons that fit with that. Google LGA 2011-v3 for more details). :)

EDIT:

Herp Derp

Made a mistake.

Correction: After some thought on the matter I remembered that the 8-gen chips doesn't work with the 100 series and 200 series chipsets on motherboards.

Please mention or quote me if you want a response. :)

Generally.. The 8th/7th/6th gen Intel stuff is an exception though.

8th gen Intel only works in 300 series LGA 1151 and 7th/6th gen only works on 100 and 200 series boards.

Otherwise; yes that is the case. All CPUs of a specific socket support a specific socket of motherboard, regardless of the chipset. You might lose some functionality in some boards configs like getting an overclockable CPU and a motherboard that doesn't support it..

But it wouldn't be PC tech if there still were more exceptions. You have some higher end CPU's on the LGA 2066 platform (X299) and not all cheaper boards will support the most expensive chips.

Your best bet is obviously checking the motherboard manufacturer's compatibility list to know what works for sure and what doesn't.

TL;DR: Generally; yes. With some exceptions like 8th gen only on 300 series for example.

No

You need to check the CPU Compatibility List of the Boards and the necessary BIOS.

Sometimes you need at least a specific BIOS version for a CPU to work, in other cases its impossible.

And then there is also the TDP Classes as well.

Some Boards only support 65W TDP CPUs, some more than that.

Yes, you have to mach the CPU with the Chipset as the 1151 is a total clusterf*

Because you have two versions, one for the 6 and 7 thousand series, one for the 8.

It makes no sense to upgrad to a 6 or 7th gen i7 as an i3-8400 is similar to those but cost half of that.

So you only get a bit more performance but have to pay like 250€ or something like that.

So it makes NO SENSE to upgrade your CPU. Especially since you won't be able to get a decent CPU for like 100-150€.

So an i3-8k is _WITH BOARD_ Cheaper than an i7-7700...

ok so, to summarize, all CPUs with the same socket as with the motherboard except 8th gen are compatible regardless of bios?

Im not really gonna upgrade to intel but to ryzen 5, just wanna know if cpu socket with same mobo socket will be compatible regardless of everything else
