SSD RAID-0 worth it?

So I've got two 1TB SSDs and I'm rebuilding so I thought... RAID? Is it worth it? Just gonna hold games and shit. Drives would be an MX500 and an 850 EVO 1TB

You could span. But why would you want to?

 

For me the ideal setup (if you don't have fast external storage available) is OS on one drive, games + weekly OS image on other. Any issues with OS and you can restore from image in minutes.

What I do is OS and main programs (i.e. Crusader Kings II) on the nVME drive, programs on the old 500GB, and games and shit on the SSDs

I wouldn't. Especially different brands.

You won't really gain much, except complication and potential failure points.

See I don't want to deal with a billion different drives in my system, any ideas there?

How much space do you actually need? Perhaps just remove some hardware. Like a drive or 2.

 

Are you holding on to old games that you hardly ever touch that could easily be downloaded again in the future if you want to reminisce?

No, I store a lot of gameplay capture (1080p60), also because I can damn it

Worth it? How? If you're talking about speed advantage probably not really (might depend more on the SSD specs and means you use to stripe them that would determine performance gain). If you're just wanting to have a larger drive pool then sure why not? As long as you're backing up your data and potential downtime if one SSD decides to die isn't a concern there is no reason you shouldn't stripe them.

Barely ever write stuff to the drives, the 1TB EVO is a drive I pulled out of a dead machine but the MX500 is brand new, and downtime isn't a big issue, I have other drives I can use plus I can just go order another one from Amazon and go pick it up from Amazon Locker in London

I'm not saying it never happens.... The fails, the errors,..But I've been lucky.

I just wanted the higher data pool originally with 2x 256GB Pro 840s.

 

Win8.1 (Probably a 4 year install at this point)

Single SSD for Windows

Few years old now 2x OLD 840 PROs in Raid0 for some selected Games/Target drive for Video Captures

2tb SSHD also for most of my Games

 

My Raid0 gets thrashed with writes,. I chop and change games, write a whole lot of video.

Drives were bought separately, one has doubled lifespan of the other.

Raid drives have 12 & 24 TB written so far.

Never had an issue, but I've never put Win10 on it either (Broken Updates put me off)

As it's a games drive and video capture drive it doesn't matter if it goes kapoot.

 

Gamesaves are backed up elsewhere, drives can be easily scrubbed n repopulated, but that's never needed to happen as of yet.

 

This isn't my first Raid0, but is my "longest".

I had Windows on there for a time, but wasn't much faster that was beneficial, so a games/capture drive it became, plus didn't want to eventually lose Windows if I changed it up later.

 

Happy with it, acknowledged I may lose it, still happy with it.

No, not worth it.

If you really want/need performance you'd get a PCIe SSD that can do like 4,5 times the transferrate with writes and around 6,5 times the transferrate while readin...

I have a 250GB 970 EVO but really what I want is to not have to deal with four drives, I might take out the 500GB - don't really need it and I can use it elsewhere

2 drives isn't that many? Buy a 2TB SSD? Micron had sales on their 1100 series for really good pricing, especially if you got it from Memory Express and converted the price to USD.

RAID 0 in the age of great SSDs just does not make much sense. Systems are so fast today that 4KQ1T1 is really a limiting factor for typical OS operations and RAID 0 hurts this metric while increasing metrics that are largely irrelevant in most typical use cases.

 

If you hate multiple drive letters (like I do) mount the 2nd drive as a folder on the first drive, problem solved.
