When you're driving a resolution that a single card cannot push.

Such  as 8K or 16K.

It could also be argued that SLI is worth it when you want multiple high resolution monitors.

That would be Crossfire.

In my opinion no, unless there was literally no better option.

Well I reacted too fast, sorry about that.

I suggest looking up benchmarks of 6970 crossfire(amd's version of sli) and then look at new gpus benchmarks an compare price of course

Also if you are going to buy a new gpu wait for the 20 series it is unveiled after 18 hours

SLI only really provides a benefit when using 2 of the top consumer cards because that lets you exceed the potential of a singular card. Otherwise you're always better off just getting the next tier card up for that extra performance and lower cost in contrast to an SLI config of the lesser cards.

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

When is sli worth it?

When you only play one (or two) games that are very well optimized for SLI and nothing else.

As it causes more Problems than it solves, its discouraged by everyone.

Especially since it either doesn't work with many games or causes trouble you wouldn't have with just one Card.

1: when the next teir up in GPUs is so expensive that its cheaper to get another card

2: when you have two of the same GPU laying around and dont want to buy a single, better one

3: when you need to output more pixels than a single card can do by itself

those are the ones as i see it

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

1. They don't support SLI. THey support Crossfire.

2. It only makes sense for testing purposes with old games as the last driver is 3 Years old (or something like that)

3. That setup is worse than a single HD7970 or RX480/R9-290(X).

So no, it makes no sense because you can get a better card that's faster. And has more memory. As the Cards only have 2GiB, wich is limiting in many modern situations.
