Worth upgrading an i5-4210M for gaming?

My laptop has:

  • an Intel Core i5-4210M (2C4T, 4,200 PassMark CPU score, similar to a Core i3-3220 / AMD Phenom II X4 965)
  • a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M (1,757 PassMark GPU score, similar to GTX 285 / Intel Iris 650)

Do you think I'd get improved gaming performance by swapping out the CPU with something like a Core i7-4940MX (4C8T, PassMark score 9,900, similar to Core i7-4770 / Core i7-6700)?

Can you swap it out? Usually these things are soldered to the board. What laptop do you have?

compare it to a cheap gaming laptop with a 1050mobile for a laugh... ul see how weak the 850m is ;v better get a new laptop in this case eventhough its socketed

A laptop with a GTX 1050 inside starts at around £650. It's not pocket change.

So if you will be swapping the cpu on the same chipset, you will be getting CPUs compatible will be based on the same architecture which definitely will not have more efficient process node, so you can throw more cores but the entire die being similar in size and power consumption. If you think of putting anything inside which are supposed to have better performance it should draw more power what your PCB VRMs are not designed for and will have power limitations.

 

And 1. You have a gpu that will be a bottleneck for almost anything above what you have. 

       2. And even if you think your CPU is the point of losing performance, no architectural improvements won't result in any better performance.

Changing the cpu wont do anything for your gaming performance, your gpu is the problem.

The only real performance improvement for your laptop would be to change the gpu, that is the bottleneck in your laptop. So if the gpu is socketed then maybe the 860m or 870m, but finding laptop gpus is much harder than cpus.

The VRM aspect is a very fair point.

 

Any idea how I can find out if the motherboard would handle a faster CPU? It's an MSI MS-1492.

 

I know the faster CPUs pull a lot more power, which will stress the cooling solution but I'm happy to buy some very decent quality thermal paste if the cooling solution is shown to be rather capable.

that should be an MSI Barebone, basically like a GE40. Youn can only upgrade your cpu
