What Pentium model do you have?

My thoughts are your CPU is just too old. I had an A6-5400K that even at 4.4Ghz would take forever to complete basic tasks in Windows 7.

Go into your System Properties and find the exact model.

Start Menu > Control Panel > Right click on Computer > Properties

I once underclocked my 8700k to 800 mhz with only 2 cores. Maybe.... your cpu is too slow and too old.

If that old CPU is all you've got to work with you can consider getting Windows 7 Crux Edition which is designed for lower end PC use.

Thats a Core 2 Duo based chip AFAIK.  It will work fine for... web browsing.

do a fresh OS install and DO NOT install anti-virus.  AV software murders low end/old CPUs.

Slower ram might be slowing down your sysyem. I don't think it should take that much time opening a file. I have a pentium E5400 (2.7 ghz) but it's only slow after startup. Another possibility is that you have a bunch of malware.

I just know it exists and is pretty efficient on low end systems. Whether it's free or not, I'm not sure. Google it and find out.

Yeah, that CPU is too old and slow.

An install of Ubuntu might help you out.

Any way to remove that with free anti viruses?

RAM can be the slowest possible, its still not normal.  Failing HDD is likely, non-malware software is also likely.  You have to keep the OS bare for these systems.

You will need to get Windows 7 home from somewhere.

How much RAM does this system have?

download a iso of windows 7 and use rufus to make a bootable flash drive and install off of that.

Don't install windows 98 I think they have free windows 7 on microsoft. And you have to activate the product. BUT, slow ram at 800mhz...
