Physically detect dead hard drives

How would someone working in a datacenter detect a single dead drive out of hundreds of servers? Obviously they're not going to log into every server and run commands. When a drive dies (on a server chassis), does the indicator light up red?

The server with the broken drive will send an alert to the admin, obviously, which will tell the admin which server it is. Or, if a server goes offline, the admin will know which server is offline and go take a look at it.

There is also lights that turn red when a drive has issues. Makes it very easy to spot.

it should be said the system automatically checks it's own drives quite often even on home pc's so the computer will know pretty quickly when a drive isn't working correctly
