I think you can fit plenty of modern gaming laptops within that weight category tbh.
Just decide on what other specs you want in there.

I don't think he needs something that powerful for school considering he is moving from a thinkpad. Maybe an i7-8550U or i5-8250U would be better.

I got a gaming PC at home so there's no need for a gaming laptop with a 1070 or something like that. Just something that could handle the Creative Clouds applications and handle a like GTA V at medium quality (You need to have some fun in school you know :) )

Then I think you should try to get an ultrabook with an i7 8550U. @ZM Fong should be able to help. A used ultrabook is also a good choice if you can find something like the Dell XPS used,
