As I have used Nvidia for 'most' of my life counting me as an Nvidia 'fanboy', I would also suggest a Nvidia card over AMD anyday though the 780TI is a little faster than the R9 290x in gaming.

Either card yields great performance, but the 780ti is better in my opinion because it's cooler out of the box and will OC a lot better because the R9 290/290x cards that are out now are mostly all stock PCB's without any extra power delivery or extra power inputs, meaning that the card runs out of headroom for OC because the power just isn't enough. you may think the remedy is to wait for non reference PCB cards to hit, well this could solve that but finding a compatible block for a non reference card may be a bit of a challenge and require more waiting. Go with the 780ti ACX, it won't disappoint :)

R9 290X water cooled is what I would get.

Why:

Mantle

TrueAudio

Higher minimum FPS (which is what matters most)

I am hoping for mantle as much as anyone else is, I personally wouldn't make a recommendation on a GPU based on unreleased tech. (not scolding just giving opinion :))

The higher minimum is all dependent on the game (much like anything when it comes to GPU's)

Mantle promises higher FPS. Doesn't matter how much higher, imo, it's worth it as any amount is enough to consider. If he won't be using G-sync, then AMD has an advantage with Mantle. Because I'm pretty sure they wouldn't even bother releasing it at all if it literally did nothing, or made the gameplay experience (i.e. FPS) worse.

Think about what we are recommending here. You don't buy a 290X to play games that don't require a 290X to push playable frame rates on. Like WoW. Old games (i.e. emulators). Or anything similar.

You buy a GPU like this to play the best graphical games at the best graphical settings (within reason) and it be enjoyable (good frame rates).

In that case, minimum FPS always matters because that decides how badly FPS drop affects you. Which is one of the most annoying things that can happen in a game that has you immersed in it (which is sort of the point of graphically beautiful/detailed games).

Unless he needs the GPU for something like CUDA or OpenCL related stuff, in which case my suggestion can be completely ignored as I don't have experience in that stuff, minimum FPS always matters with GPUs of this tier imo.

By the time Mantle really becomes prevalent, you'll want to upgrade GPUs anyways.

What ever suits best, could wait till the 800 series GPU's.  On the AMD side though, the cards are reasonably expensive (in AUS) because of bitcoin.  I'd just wait seeing as Q1 will hopefully bring us some new GPU's on the nvidia side.  But if your busting to get one, 780ti is better gaming performance and r9 290x is better at mining

A 780Ti will outperform even a watercooled 290X.

If you are going to watercool a 780Ti, all I can say is,

LUCKY.

Except in Minimum FPS. All Nvidia GPUs, even a Titan, falls to AMD's higher tier GPUs in that category.

For example, the 7970 GHz edition beat a Titan in minimum FPS in the exact same benchmark.
