GTX 1170 upgrade?

Wjjm75

Right now I have a gtx 1060 6gb which I bought in June, I would prefer to buy a GPU for £450 and have it last a long time, so my question is do I sell my GTX 1060 6gb later in the year and buy a gtx 1170 and have it last me ~5-6 years, or get a gtx 1160 when my gtx 1060 slows down?

My parents think I should weigh up the costs of both options (I have a job so I just wanna to go the least expensive over time route)

Edit: The 1070ti is also an option, really just looking for extremely future proof cards

I'd still recommend the 'two generations per upgrade' scheme.

you have a 1060, then you should wait for the 1260 unless you can aim for a higher end card like the 1170 or 1180. The more times you upgrade your stuff, the more you end up spending for the performance you get because you pay the 'new stuff' tax every time you do so.

Then a 1070 or 1080 would have been a better option if you wanted it to last. Might as well upgrade your 1060 to an 1170 or 1180 then which should last you till the 12 series.

Well I can tell you I played a couple of AAA games on my shit hd8670m notebook thats like 6 years old, graphics were on low but it did run so I bet if you reduce the graphics a bit you can surely make it to two generations

P.S. I played games like Tomb Raider, MGSV, Arma 3, SC2, GW2, Elder Scrolls Online and many other demanding games and yes HD8670m is garbage

I had an rx550 for 6 months and tbh because I have a source of income, I don’t see a reason to deal with low FPS and low settings, the rx550 is just a shit gt1030

Let's clear something: if the 11 series will come the 1080 will still be much more powerful and futureproof than the 1160 AND almost the same price (for example the GTX 980-1060 6GB's price). You shouldn't always buy the fanciest and hottest new cards, the older but higher-end cards are could be still more powerful.

PC: i7 6700K@4GHz, EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW, HyperX Savage 16GB@2400MHz (2×8), ASUS B150-PLUS, BQ! Pure Rock cpu cooler, 4x blue LED fan (3x Sharkoon, 1x Corsair), WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM, Sharkoon DG7000 case

GearSamsung U28E570D 4K@60Hz, LG LED 22M35 1080p@60Hz, HAMA uRage Cyberboard keyboard, HAMA uRage Reaper NX mouse, HyperX Cloud II 7.1, Logitech Z623 2.1 @200W RMS, Sades Gaming mousepad, Vertagear SL2000 racing chair (black/white)

How is the 980, a $550 GPU in the same price category?

Youre also excluding the possibility of architectural changes like adding Tensor Cores and GDDR6 vs GDDR5.

Also the 980 is about even for a lot of things withe the 1060. Its marginally more performance in some cases but not by much usually.

The 1080 outperformed the 980ti despite being 104 vs 102 GPU.

Oh boy... okay than I write it down...

You really compared the price of a new GTX 980? I mean a 1-2 year old card in good condition on a 'Used tech' webpage (you'll find a salute one for sure) which costs around ~300-350 bucks. Trust me when the new 1160 will get announced and buyable on Amazon the 1080's price will get significantly lower than it's now and drop to the 'affordable' category for the poster of the topic.

Well the prices of the 1080 have staed the same or gone up since launch. Now is an atypical time for GPU prices...

Then get the 1170 or 1180? The performance gain of 1060 --> 1160 wont be big enough to justify the expense. High end 11 series cards are rumoured to have $100 higher MSRP than high end 10 series, expect at least $50 increase in mid range cards like the 1160.
