I currently have a 8320 paired with a Asus M5A99fx pro r 2.0. Do you think it would be good to switch over to something like a i7 4770k with a good but used z87 board, or a i7 3770k with a z77 board. I will be doing gaming and 720p renderings in Vegas. Would the renders and gaming be improved using a i7?

You're bound to see an improvement as it's simply a faster chip. But for the extra dollars you pay? Some would say it isn't worth it.

I'm not very familiar with Vegas, does it mostly use GPU acceleration?

Would the renders and gaming be improved using an i7:

Renders - YES!

Gaming - NO!

Only go for the i7 if you are really doing a decent amount of rendering.

Does yt videos count lol?

I could always oc the 8320. What kind of air cooler or aio shouldi get? I currently have a cm 212 evo im planning on getting it past 4.3 while maintaining adequate temps.

It supports both OpenGL and CUDA, but in my experience, both are kind of finicky :/

Depends on the OC. I OC'ed my i5-2500k to 4.3GHz with a CM 212+ and was hitting my comfortable area of 80C.

A nice AIO would be a Kraken X60, H100, and if you can get your hands on one, the Swiftech H220(possibly H320?), or if you can't, Cooler Master sells the same unit(can't remember the name...).

For air coolers, you could go with a Noctua NH-D14 or Phanteks PH-TC14PE(multiple colors), at least what I would choose.

Make sure the AIO and air coolers will fit in your case!

If you haven't already you should play around with overclocking with the 212 and see what you can get.

otherwise - NZXT havik 140- noctua nh-u14s  - nh-d14

The AMD beats the I7 in nothing.

In 8 thread games (which are the only thing they can come close on besides GPU bound titles) a I7 will beat a AMD OC or sold at 5ghz in multiplayer (which is the only thing that matters). AMD is a fantastic budget option for newer 8  thread "next gen" titles, but they are sill pretty bad for MMO's like Guild Wars 2, WoW (floating point is half).

Also you don't need an expensive z87 board. My board and chip were 280 bucks and I can overclock to the moon with water cooling. With a 30 dollar air cooler I am at 4.5 ghz. Literally all that matters is the chip. You also can get by on a smaller PSU with a 4770k.

As far as rendering? The 4770k is quite a bit ahead, but the AMD is no slouch. The AMD is a very nice budget rendering machine and as someone else said it probably won't matter at all at 720p.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlC81MjwelBgdEZNV3l6aHl1eUNwSUR4Rml0MXMzN1E&usp=sharing

Is the 8320 on a cheaper Asus, Gigabyte 990fx board a decent buy if you don't play FPU bound, primarily 3 core games and are going to like 4.4/4.5ghz OC? Sure.

Should you ever buy a 9xxx, a more expensive power supply, a stupidly expensive saber tooth board for an AMD over a cheap Z87 a 4770k and cheaper PSU that draws half the power with the 4770k and beats a 5ghz AMD at stock? Hell no.  AMD has a place, and that place is budget. When you try to make them premium products you get screwed other places on price and the performance is lacking.

Are there parts of the world where the 4770k is overpriced? Yup. Are they overpriced in the U.S.? Hell no. When you take everything into consideration they are the same price as a 8350 overclocked and less then a 9xxx. You got two of these stores in NY and you can price match the 4770k through Staples online.

I would never buy a 8350 or up because the power draw at near 5ghz is just stupid. But I would definitely buy a 8320 with a OC for a render/next gen game machine on a extreme budget.

I have a GTX 770 Gigabyte, and 4770k OC quite a bit on a cx600m (corsairs budget series) that cost 50 bucks on sale. Good luck doing that on a 50 dollar power supply and a high OC on a AMD. I would have had to pay MORE for an AMD at even close to 5ghz, and my power bill would only make it more expensive down the line.

8320 is plentt new and fine keep it and be happy. Why ate there so many people that want to "upgrade" even though their parts are current?

wow, for an i5 2500k, isnt that overclock on the low side? I guess not all of us get the beast chips :P To op, I'd reccomend a swiftech h220 if you can get your hands on it. Or the cm eisenburg if the h220 isn't available. They're basically the same thing, but with different names in different regions.

Finally my Santa hat doesn't look out of place
