Ubuntu won't recognise the inbuilt ethernet port!

how do I use apt-get if its a local file on the system?

Sorry, use dpkg. dpkg -i "filename.deb"

I need some help with running ubuntu. I just want to load a few programs onto it before it gets disconnected from the internet permanently, however the computer won't detect the built in ethernet port on the motherboard. I'm running a gigabyte GA-945GCM-S2L (https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-945GCM-S2L-rev-10#ov) with 2Gb of DDR2 667MHz RAM. This is a fresh install of the newest version of ubuntu and I have no clue what is going on! Help!

Do you have a USB WiFi-adapter or something you could use for a bit to install the r8168-dkms - package? r8168-dkms is a driver for the NIC.

No, unfortunately i don't. I could probably pick one up online. I might see if I can buy one. Is it possible to download the package on windows and transfer it to the ubuntu pc with a USB?

Yes, if you knew the URLs you need. To get the list of the URLs you'd need you'd have to be able to download the package-list, and for that you need a working Internet-connection...

So was this what I needed to download? I did a quick search and found it on what seems to be an official Ubuntu site.

Well, yes, but you may need additional packages, too. When you try to install it, it'll complain if you need more packages, so I suppose you'll just have to do multiple rounds of downloading from there.

Then use apt-get to install from a package using the required switch.

Did you CD to the directory you are in? i.e "cd /home/yourusername/Desktop" then run the command?

I was going to mark this as solved, however, the computer still wont detect the built in ethernet port. the driver did successfully install, and I restarted the computer just to be sure that it worked. Any ideas?

Does typing "sudo ifconfig" into a terminal return anything?

I haven't used 17.04 and I haven't used the desktop version of Ubuntu in forever, but seems they removed net-tools from 17.04 install by default. Try typing "ip addr" instead.

Or just install another Distro :P
