Crossfire restrictions

I was wondering what two cards need to have in common to work with AMD crossfire.

 

For example, could a rx 560 and rx 580 work in crossfire?

or must it be the same card?

and

 

can an ASUS RX580 work with a MSI RX580

In the past I THINK (don't quote me on it) you could CFX a HD7970 & HD7950. I have no idea about this with the RX series.

 

So long as the two 580's have the same amount of VRAM and can match each others clock speed there's no reason they can't (unless the manufacturer put some sort of BIOS lock on it so it can't CFX with cards of different brands).

Crossfire require the same GPU. For example, the HD 7970 and R9 280X shared GPU (the compute core), so they can go crossfire. There is no restriction in VRAM or clock speed or brand.

AMD Crossfire is a little more forgiving than nVidia SLi.

 

Crossfire will work as long as it is the same GPU core.

It will work even if:

• Different Core / Memory speeds
• Different Memory capacity
• Different manufacturer

Using the RX-560 and RX-580 as examples...

 

The RX-460 (all variants) and RX-560 (all variants) share the same 'Baffin' GPU core, so you can run those in Crossfire.

For the RX-580, either another RX-580, RX-570, RX-480, or RX-470 will be compatible.
