Instagram Lite Quietly Launches To Find A Billion More Users Abroad

Instagram’s future growth depends on the developing world, so it’s built a version of its app just for them. “Instagram Lite” for Android appeared today in the Google Play App Store without any announcement from the company. “The Instagram Lite app is small, allowing you to save space on your phone and download it quickly” the description reads.

 

At just 573 kilobytes, Instagram Lite is 1/55th the size of Instagram’s 32 megabyte main app. It lets you filter and post photos to the feed or Stories, watch Stories, and browse the Explore page, but currently lacks the options to share videos or Direct message friends.

I think this is actually a really good move. It's something that every social media company should be doing. I can't imagine it costs much at all to create and I'm sure it will bring in at least some new users.

I'd be shocked if they weren't included. I'm sure a somewhat large amount of people from North America would switch from the full version to the lite if this is the case. I would never because I just couldn't sacrifice direct messaging, but anyone who doesn't care about that would certainly prefer an ad-free experience.

 

I hope this goes well for Instagram. It's probably my favorite social media platform and I'd love to see an increase in user growth.

Instagram is truly cancer, but works extremely well as a free marketing tool. (That is, if zucc's shitty AI doesn't ban your account for mass following people)

Always kinda strange to me that so many of these companies make lite apps for international markets. I know fb messenger has one that im "not allowed" to install because i live in the US. Id much rather have these stripped down apps than the ones they load up with so much extra shit that i cant actually find what i want.

All of the "lite" apps are releasing because Google released a bare-bones version of Android Oreo for budget phones in developing markets.

Android Go released with "Go" versions of most Google apps. To go along with those lightweight Google apps, lots of app developers are launching lighter versions of their social media platforms. Facebook doesn't say that Instagram Lite is for Android Go, but I'm sure that's where most people will download it.

Well just use a browser then the app is 0kb. Every android handset has a browser anyway, just don't see why its necessary.

Thats pretty fair come to think of it. I imagine ads (on instagram though) would slow down older devices a lot.
