Im not sure but i would say there is no real link between them but...

Crosshair

Striker

Rampage

Commando

all sound gun/violence related and i believe FPS games are the best selling. Would make sense seems its aimed at gamers?

although with there new lineup they have moved to generic terms like

Hero

Gene

What is it specifically that you don't get?

Current series:

Crosshair: AMD Board

Maximus: Consumer Intel series (P67, Z68, Z78, Z87 etc)

Rampage: Enthusiast Intel Seres (X58, X79 etc)

Current models:

Extreme: Name says it all

Formula: Mid-range ROG board, cheaper than Extreme and still packed with features

Gene: Smaller form factor board (mATX), offers a ton of features in a smaller package.

Impact: No compromise mITX board, smaller than Gene boards and with limited expansion possibilities, but still retains a ton of features.

Hero: Cheaper full size board but still retaining many of the popular ROG features.

Rampage = Socket LGA 2011 (The Enthusiast Platform)

Maximus = Socket LGA 1155/1150 (The Consumer Platform)

Crosshair = AMD

The Roman numeral corresponds to the edition of the particular series.

'Impact' means it's mITX, 'Gene' means it is mATX, and the Maximus Hero is a more value oriented RoG board.

Now I'm not 100% on this, so correct me if I'm wrong: 'Extreme' is the top in terms of feature set and gaming oriented performance. 'Formula' is overclocking oriented and has certain features and physical attributes to help in overclocking.

Intel i5 3570K - ASRock Extreme4 - Corsair Vengeance 8Gb RAM - ASUS GTX 660 Ti - Samsung 840 250Gb SSD (OS-Games) - WD 750Gb HDD (Storage) - Corsair TX650W PSU - Corsair 300R
