Should I trust this brand? (Power Supply)

Blueprint

I will soon be buying a power supply for a new PC I will be building. I have decided to opt for a 850W power supply so that when I upgrade in the future it won't be much of a problem. I need c6/c7 power states compatibility (which the power supply in the link below has) as I will be running a i7 4770k.

Is XFX a reputable brand? -> http://www.scan.co.uk/products/850w-xfx-xxx-p1-850x-xxb9-hybrid-modular-85-eff-80-plus-bronze-sli-crossfire-eps-12v-quiet-fan-atx-v

I'm not sure if this is a good quality supply for my build. Has anyone used this supply before or used an XFX branded supply? If so, do you think it's a good quality power supply?

Thanks,

Blueprint

As stated it's a Seasonic made PSU. Specifically the M12II Bronze 850w unit (SS-850AM). It's a solid mainstream unit and is internally identical to the Corsair TX850v2 - minus modularity.

The problem is that unit is out of stock and is under pre-order. If you need it right away, you may need to look for something else.

My Specs will be

i7 4770k

Asus Z87-A

Fractal Design R4

GTX 770 + (May be having another in SLI in future)

128gb SSD + 2x 2tb WD Caviar Blue + 1x 1tb Caviar Green

8gb Corsair Vengeance low profile 1600 (Upgrading to 16gb later and possibly 32gb after that)

Dvd Optical drive

Gigabit Ethernet PCI Network Adapter

+ Extra 120/140 mm fans on Case later on (possibly 3 more)

Thanks,

Blueprint

That setup can be power on a 750w PSU. Something like the XFX ProSeries 750w Black Edition. Also a Seasonic build - KM3 design like the Cooler Master V700/850/1000 and Corsair AX760/860, but with a lower quality fan (the XFX). http://www.scan.co.uk/products/750w-xfx-pro-black-edition-p1-750b-befx-full-modular-80-plus-gold-90-eff-eps-12v-sli-crossfire-1x120

XFX psus are made by Seasonic which are excellent manufacturers. A 750W would be enough to power your system imo.

Corsairs are great, haven't had problems with them ever.  Built to last.  They are worth every penny of the money you put into them.  Corsair, Antec are both great brands (as others have said).  Just be safe and pick up one of them The AX series is super high quality but they are all decent. Maybe go for a lower wattage higher quality as long as it meets your needs.

Are you sponsored by corsair? You can't recommend any PSU of a brand, just because yours is awesome. This is about XFX and we found out that the unit OP linked, is indeed very good.

My apologies.  Didn't know I wasn't aloud to recommend other brands that had been good to me on a number of occasions.  Ill keep that in mind next time I post.  And for the record, I don't fucking work for corsair.

Both of you recommended a brand you have both never heard of, and go by it's efficiency rating, this tells me and any self respecting person in the know, you should not be giving recommendations until you research more.

You may as well tell him to get a Raidmax 80 plus unit and then explain why his PC fried.

However in this case, the XFX is excellent.

hey, my raidmax psu has been running fine for 3.5 years. Yeah, im either super lucky or this shit is going to blow within the week!

In answer to him, sure he's allowed to recommend other brand. But this thread is about if xfx power supply OP linked is any good.

Haha! XFX being recommended for a UK customer.

Good luck if it blows after the first year (during which time your retailer is obligated to deal with RMAs). After that you may as well bin it.

I suppose since it's a seasonic psu it's less of an issue than if you were buying one of their doubledodgy gpus with no vrm cooling ;).

Seriously, he clearly didn't know about much about the XFX power supplies so he decided to recommend an alternative that he had a good experience with. What is your problem with that, looking at other options is always good. And was calling him a corsair employee really necessary?

Knocking someone for recommending a Corsair unit over XFX is also unwarranted as any corsair psu can actually be RMA'd if there is a problem, whereas the XFX RMA centre consists of one fat guy in a room sticking 'no fault found' labels on the outside of boxes shipped to them

I personally have not used XFX power supplies in my OWN systems, but I have used and suggested them for other individuals.

  • Recommended a XFX Core Edition 550W for a friend's new system build
  • Used a XFX Core Edition 550W in one person's new system
  • Used a XFX cored Edition 430W (semi-modular version) in another person's system upgrade

I haven't heard any problems with any of them so far...and the first two has been about 2 years now.

My two cents:

  1. Is XFX a reputable brand? Yes, XFX is a reputable and reliable brand.
  2. Do I recommend them? Yes.
  3. Would I consider using them in a future system? Yes.
  4. Are they comparable to the major brands like Antec, Corsair, BeQuiet!, SeaSonic? Yes, though, XFX is still quite new in the power supply market (i.e. versus SeaSonic's 38+ years / Antec's 27+ years)...but they are not a brand-new company. In fact, they are quite the opposite. They are known for making graphics cards (and a few motherboards back in the day).
