OLD HDD not showing up

Hi

 

I have an old HDD that I used to use for a backup drive on an old computer.

 

I put it in this computer (specs in signature) but when I do this is what happens:

 

1. I boot my computer up (it seems to take much longer than usual)
2. The drive does not show up in file explorer
3. If I go into disk management, it shows up as raw file type. I then try to format it but it gives me an error
4. In task manager, the disk shows 100% usage and 4000ms response times with no reads or writes

 

To be clear. This IS NOT my boot drive, I want to use it as a secondary storage drive.

 

Is this drive dead or can I somehow fix it?

Sounds like it could potentially be dead... Do you by any chance have another pc you could try sticking it into to be 100% sure?

 

EDIT: is it making any funny noises?

No it doesn't make any clicking noises.

 

I'll try putting it in another PC and get back to you.

Also run a chkdsk to be sure https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee872425.aspx.

It could just have crashed and still be recoverable.

It could just have crashed and still be recoverable. 

I can't because when I go to disk management, the drive shows this (Disk 3)

 

 

If I try to go initialise, I choose MBR and it says incorrect function

If I choose GPT it says "The specified disk is not convertible because the size is less than the minimum size requried for GPT disks.

Unfortunately sounds like your hdd is dead. Do you have anything important on it?

Drive is most likely dead. If you have important files on it, take it to a drive recovery service and get your files off it.

 

If you do have important files and you are taking it to a recovery service, do not power it on as you can cause further damage.

No I just wanted to use it as more storage
