but the installer gets stuck on a splashscreen with a beaver on it and that is it.

Can you boot without uefi bios enabled? Is there an option to go back to plain old BIOS settings?

no display, it only outputs to an external one once the os has booted

......

so take out the installer, turn on the system as if you were going to fire up the default OS, and get into BIOS. Can you do that?

it broke so someone ripped it off

Brilliant.

Ok. Try this, yank out the optical drive and the hard drive. This gives the laptop nothing to boot from.

Turn on the laptop. When it can't find anything to boot from, it should throw an error message like "no bootable devices found. Press F1 (or the like) to enter BIOS"

Can you do that?

nothing the display stays off as the laptop doesn't output until an os has booted

The system is beyond salvaging then.

There is something in the UEFI/BIOS ubuntu doesn't like and until you can get in there and change that out, it will not boot an Alt-OS

The server one is a known issue: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shim-signed/+bug/1766286

but that should be fixed by now I think

really how can you tell?

because the error messages refere to the EFI boot manager.

Try formatting the drive first maybe (if you don't care about what's on it now), that way you start clean. The fact that you don't have a screen to see BIOS or boot options makes this a lot more difficult :P
