Hi,
Recenly i am playing witcher 3 with gtx1060, when i turn on the vsync on nvidia control panel, it can keep 60fps most of the time but some time it will drop to 51fps or lower. I have read some articles that with vsync on it will immediately drop to 50% of your refresh rate which is 30fps for this case if cannot keep up 60fps. Then why i will have around 51fps appear?

Thanks a lot!

I read this as "51 foot drop with vsync on" and was thinking why it would matter if vsync is on when you're dropping your monitor 51 feet.

Anyway, I've never heard of it defaulting to 30fps if it can't get to 60fps. Maybe it's an older thing but games don't do that as far as I know. Plus it would make disabling vsync almost worth some screen tear compared to 30fps.

Thank you for reply, I have read something like this:

It says :That is how Vsync works, it locks framerate to even multiples of your monitor's refresh rate (60->30->20) etc to sync frames to refreshes & eliminate screen tearing. ...With plain ol regular vsync you should never see a dip to 50 fps, only 60 or 30 unless it isn't working.

thats why i feel confused.........

I think you're just getting CPU bottleneck when you go to areas like middle of novrigrad where there is a lot going on tons of npc and such, the CPU becomes a bottleneck to the point it can't sustain the v-sync.

Also maybe the 30 fps lock happens because you're using v-sync on nvidia control, honestly I always enabled v-sync through the game menu and doing so the behavior is the one you expect where it will do as many fps as it can to reach the 60fps mark and not lock down on 30.

There is a possibility that within 1 sec the frame dropped to 30fps for a moment and what ever frame rate counter you use just averaging the number.

If you're using MSI AB OSD, you can reduce the polling to 100ms. It's not perfect but close enuff.
