So i just built a 8700k on a z370 prime with a 212. Factory clock and everything only changed is XMP for ram at 3200. looking at temps. i sit right at 32-35C. which is not too bad being ambient temp is right around 28-30ish. go to get a factory spec cinebench test. instant to 80s plus sometimes hits 90s first test. all cores. Paste is arctic silver 5, was a dot normal size. any help here is greatly thanked . Gets me concerned on temps being too hot. i was looking to stick with air right now. Wasn't going to h2o yet.

thanks for looking. hope to fix this issue soon.

While the 212 evo isn't great it should manage better than 90C on a stock 8700k. What case do you have and what fan configuration?

@sazrocks it's a Fractal Design Define R6 case. Factory config. 2 in front as pull and one in back as a push, I was thinking I needed more as well. but as soon as the test stops. it goes back to 35ish in a second or two.

That still doesn't sound right. How fast is the CPU fan set to run?

Stock settings is the issue here. Your mobo is using suto-OC feature when CPU is running demanding tasks. You can disable that feature from mobo settings. Temps will most likely still be rather high, but you could set manual voltages to keep them low.

I hit 86c with a 360mm AIO under AIDA64 at 5.0GHz.  These chips are scorchers, even at stock speeds.  The 212EVO was launched when chips were cooler and slower, it's not what it was.

so i ended up getting a x72 kraken AIO and it is a total difference. Guess I have to go to water, because i didn't snatch the 8700k to under clock it.

Underclocking or even undervolting isn't the thing I'm talking about. If you look how voltages are while stress test is running, you understand what I mean. Intel has had this issue since Devils Canyon. 8700K is hot chip, there's no denying that. But you can run it at stock clocks with budget cooler and reasonable temps. Not overclocking, but not over 85C temps either.

Intels stock voltage is 1.1V. You will never see that voltage if mobo is set to use auto voltage. Mobo will control voltage and raise it to 1.29-1.37V when running heavy tasks. Those voltages are good for hefty OC and way over what you need for just stock clocks. So easy way to fix things is to disable any auto-OC feature and set manual voltages.

For a matter of facts @LoGiCalDrm is right, this is an Asus motherboard and those have MCE enable by default meaning the i7 8700K is not boosting up to 4.3ghz but 4.7ghz which made temps so high.

One thing that keeps bothering me plenty though is how do people still buy the 212 Evo in 2018? when it has been replaced by the 212X years ago already which has a much improved fan and slightly better heatsink design.

Either was this is the ultimate best cooler to buy for the locked i7 8700 as I have proven mine locked at 4.4ghz 1.2v keeps within the 68Cº~70Cº on max loads while being virtually silent (thanks to the new fan too)... but for an unlocked CPU it is a waste of money to get one of these as they will fall short on the only reason you buy an unlocked CPU which is overclocking it.

212X has been more expensive for long time.  $10-20 more for very little improvement is usually where older takes it. Plus availability.

well the test uses all cores and threads to complete, so it's not bizarre that the system doesn't have resources available to run the desktop. If you've set cinebench priority to highest in task manager, that'll be why it seems like it freezes.

yeah like said. i just went with the x72. everything is fine now. having an issue of when doing a stress it kind of locks up the pc. any idea on that cause?

Two things to try. First is to drop XMP of RAM. Second is to increase pagefile. This sounds like RAM is maxing out.
