I want to upgrade the HDD in my laptop to an 250GB SATA SSD. I already checked out the Crucial MX500 and the PNY CS900. But I would like to get some advice. I'm not interested in an more expensive and faster SSD since the laptop is only my secondary PC.

Thanks!

Crucial has always been my go-to company for good SSDs.

I've had mixed results from PNY gear in the past.

Personally I've worked with Intel, ADATA, Samsung, Corsair, & HyperX SSDs for various projects. Can't say I've had many issues with any of them. Personal preference out of all the brands would have to be Samsung. For the capacities I bought they yielded the highest R/W performance.

At the end of the day though your best option is to read buyer reviews and go with the one that has the performance figures you're interested in.

My first choices when it comes to SSDs would be Samsung and Intel for their reliability. However, all will perform about the same in actual usage: FAST... especially compared to your prevous HDD.

Do not be much influenced by synthetic benchmarks. They are mostly good for marketing.
They are run at queue lengths of 32 or so to find the maximum sustainded i/o rates. But, in normal operations, we do things mostly one or two at a time so such readings are not a good predictor of your performance. In fact at low queue lengths, the response times of all current SSDs are amazingly similar.

However, if you are still having trouble deciding, this might help you a little bit:
