4.6ghz vs. 4.7ghz

I was wondering if it is even worth spending an extra $100 on an 8th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-8700K 6-Core Processor (12M Cache, up to 4.7 GHz) instead of the 8th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-8700 6-Core Processor (12M Cache, up to 4.6 GHz) included in the price?

no it's not worth it for 99% of the people out there unless you get a kick out of the idea of overclocking the shnit out of it and do benchmarking...if that doesn't sound entertaining to you then it's not worth it.

Only get the 8700K if you plan on Overclocking it to 5.0+.  Otherwise the CPU savings and the motherboard savings make the 8700 a better deal.

The larger difference is the K which has an unlocked multiplier (overclocking).  The base non-K version has a locked multiplier so overclocking is limited.

 

If you didn't plan on overclocking ever I'd save a few bucks and go non-K.

Considering 4.6GHz to 4.7GHz is a 2% performance increase, unless your 8700K build (which would require a better motherboard and cooler) is only 2% more expensive, no. But the point of a K series is that you overclock it. The 8700 has a all-core turbo of 4.3GHz, you can overclock the 8700K to 4.8GHz+ pretty easily.

 

If you're happy overclocking, it might be worth it, if you're not, don't bother.

17% more performance in a best case scenario, not too hard if you can spend an hour or two reading some guides and have the patience for stability testing, which a lot of people don't, which is why you see posts like "I ran Cinebench and it passed so I'm stable guys".

Depending on motherboard, it's as easy as a button click.  Similar to modding a car, you end up paying a LOT more for what you end up getting.  The fun is in the doing and testing, the pure performance of it is secondary IMO.

BCLK overclocking may not be available on anything other than a Z or X board. It's up to the manufacturer.

With non-K CPU, Intel locked it. If your board does not have a clock gen chip, not even 101MHz BCLK works. If your board does have clock gen chip, it will top at somewhere between 102-104MHz before Intel ME kills the fun.

 

Gone are the days when no one needs an unlocked CPU, and yes I have been there.

I think that if you have the money then buy i7-800K to do overclocking or you should consider i5-8600K as it is more power full than 7th gen i7 cores and it 

also does good overclocking too.And with the extra money you can spend it on Ram,GPU etc.

Man, I take it this is not an overclocking forum lol!

Get the K man, OCing is fun! It's like buying a fast car but not driving it fast! I don't care what anyone says, 4.7 or 4.8 is absolutely 100% noticeably faster in EVERYDAY tasks compared to stock.
