Best Video Camera $2K With Lens

I am moving to college soon and still want to continue my hobby of videographer and photography, more so video. I currently use all of my dads equipment which is 7D Mark II mainly with 24-105mm on it. It's ok for 1080p video but it's mainly a stills camera. So I am looking for my own camera. I was looking at the A7 III, Black magic pocket 4K, or GH5. I mainly want two lenses, 24-105mm equivalent and a wide angle. Maybe another 50mm or something but that can be later. Any suggestions?

Just keeping this here as a I'd say it's a bit of a toss up between the A7III and GH5. A7III will give you better image quality, particularly in low light, along with usable autofocus in video. The GH5 gives you a more video-oriented feature set, such as full size HDMI, XLR ports (with the grip), plus adaptors and speed boosters.

 

 I'd probably go A7III, but it's a tough call.

You won’t get a A7iii + lens for 2k sadly, just the body. However you can easily find used A6300/6500 and A7s ii for under 1500USD.

 

The there is the G85 too that is a good option.

You are not getting a worthwhile sony FF camera with a worthwhile lens for under, or anywhere near 2k. For the setup you are after, even buying used, you are looking at 3k easily, if not 3.5k. 

 

The panasonics are cheaper and you can get something that does 4k for much less, but I don't really like that mft sensor, an apsc is a much better option. 

 

So you can go the Sony route and get an a6500, as mentioned above, although crop lens choices are waaay too limited on Sony atm. expand your budget to fit an a7iii and a general purpose lens, which I'd probably got with the tamron 28-75mm, since 2.8 aperture and IS give you the best of both worlds, though nowhere near as good. 

 

I have a harder time recommending Canon than usually, since if you don't really care about stills, its hard to do so atm, even though, they have the best AF around in video, you obviously have access to Canon glass and have other pros as well, the lack of good resolutions and other video centric features might be a detriment to your particular workflow. 

 

Honestly, best you can do is the a7iii. In this case, I would recommend you just break your piggybank, but I realise that is rarely possible. The camera with the lens from b&h is currently at $2800. I don't think even going used you'd find anything for less than $2500.

For a stills + video camera, you cannot beat the a7iii. It is a DRAMATICALLY more expensive system than the panasonic or BMPCC4K, but those sensor can be more challenging to use in low light, and will pretty much always give you noisier pictures when you are not in control of the lighting (ie not using a flash). 

 

I will say that if you are limited on funds, you might be better off with an a6500, XT-2, or other APS-C camera. The camera and lenses are cheaper, and I find the quality to be suitable for all types of shooting. If you aren't making steady money from you work or loaded with cash, I would say it is better to go with the cheaper system. If you spend more than 25% of your effort on video, go with the a6500, 18-105 F4, and then a prime lens that works for what you shoot. 

 

That is not to say that professionals don't use APSC or M4/3 cameras btw.
