Upgrade your GPU 1st, then upgrade your CPU.

I had a i7-950 with a gtx 1070 , and was able to play witcher 3 wild hunt in max setings in 2560x1600 @60-100 fps. 

I later upgraded my CPU to the Ryzen 7 2700x... I don't notice much difference in frame rates. 

The reason I got the 2700x was for x264 streaming  I knew the CPU upgrade would barely affect my fps in gaming... because games are almost ALL GPU bound now a-days.

I'm using the 8600 myself (on a 120mm liquid cooler)  and it performs like a champ.

If you just want to play AAA games.

While streaming on it is totally possible it'll require some fine tuning depending on what you play, since it really pushes it. you also wont hit more then 75FPS avg.

 

To answer your question: CPU for sure.

I also do get why you think future proofing is BS.

My future proofed 4790K-GTX980 rig and first that pesky 980 died and now 1 year later my CPU is toast as well.

Went mid tier myself and couldn't be happier, power consumption is now down a load with noise being minimal considering I use A CM 130 Mini-ITX case.

Maybe he could get the GTX 1080 Ti and upgrade the CPU to a Xeon X5675 or similar 6-core Xeon and overclock to 4.2GHz or higher

i recall making a video for youtube about 2 years ago where i was showing 8 or 10 games that were consistently using all the threads/core of my CPUs...and this was 2 or 3 years ago...now at this point in time the list would pretty much be way too long to put in this thread...

Not for gaming at all, as said 8700k currently is the fastest for gaming, there isnt any faster or even same as fast period. HEDT had always been slower than desktop plattform in gaming, well atleast in recent years, more so since x299 and "mesh" design

 

Also 7700k is outdated and there is no use in buying it anymore, since its almost the same price as a 8700k. If you can get one cheaper than the 8600k it could be worth it. otherwise this is the real waste of money, spending full prize on outdated hardware always has been. Its like buying a 780ti/980ti for 649$, ofc its cheaper than a 1080ti, but also ridiculously worse.

I mean, I see where you guys are coming from, I just dont see the reason to buy a expensive card if you are not going to use it fully. Like I got a 1080 and I do 1440p gaming. I would say thats using the card. I like to think of getting like a really fast car but never go over 80mph. Whats the point of having the car that cost you a arm and a leg.

Yeah, but the price difference... He already have a LGA 1366 mobo and 6-core Xeon would cost something like 25-75 USD.

yea but its slow no matter what he is doing with it, it wont be a huge upgrade AKA waste of money. What score can your x5670 in Cinebench on 1core? 120 points with your overclock maybe? Because thats the number thats relevant for gaming. I mean its slower than a r3 1200. It just wont survive the next GPU upgrade without being a bottleneck...

OP's computer is from 09...so this card might have to last him another 9 years, so why not upgrade to the best, he may not be like some of us and every 2 years get the newest?

About 130-140 in single core. But it's still pretty good for gaming.

X58 Xeons aren't too bad even when compared to a i7-8700K.

Get Pinnacle Ridge or an i5 8500, I have a a 2600 in a rig here that destroys those ancient chips. You guys are delusional.

Why are you comparing it to the X5650? You should at least compare it to this one, but even that X5690 is running at a lot slower clock speed than the i7-8700K. And userbenchmark isn't the best benchmark for comparing CPUs.

yes, because its a 9yr old cpu, and his gpu isnt bad at all, better then mine, and i get good fps with mine. Older cpu's cant perform as well as newer cpu's in games which do depend on cpu.

He would still get a lot more fps with the i7-960 and GTX 1080 Ti than i7-8700K and GTX 1060.

Those synthetic benchmarks have nothing to do with gaming performance. Cinebench is specifically for content creation, and the CPU-Z one is closely related.

I'm done going round and round with you lol. His gpu is still good, something that's an upgrade to me, and i have no reason atm to upgrade my gpu but is a upgrade to alot of people on here. That cpu though, it's upgrade worthy. You're the only one on here saying otherwise, so i'm sure he'll go majority.

Well the video you posted shows the 8700k trampling the 920 in video games. If he was aiming for 60fps it would be sufficient at lower settings. He's aiming for high refresh rate though, and that takes a very powerful CPU. My 4790k at 4.7GHz can't handle 144fps in new stuff.

That FF bench tests both the GPU and the CPU. Do a FireStrike physics test and we can go from there.
