Currently Dell is selling G7 with i7, 16GB Ram, 1060MaxQ, 128SSD+1 TB (5400RPM) and 4K display for $1,399.99.

Alienware 15 with i7, 16GB Ram, 1060 OC, 128 M.2SSD+1 TB (7200 RPM), 1080p IPS, and larger battery for $1,449.99.

Is the Alienware a better buy for only $50 more, or does the 4K on the G7 make up for slower storage, graphics, and smaller battery?

The 1060 Max-Q is designed to be power efficient and quiet. But it gets about 15-20% less fps.

Wasn’t necessarily planning on gaming st 4K.  It’s my understanding that the LG 1080p panel on the G series is pretty bad and 4K has better reviews.

But at that price I was thinking if the Alienware with full 1060, faster storage and larger battery would offset against the 4K.

You have your answer. Which AW15 panel you choose?

The Alienware is the better performer out of the 2 since it has an overclocked standard GTX 1060 out of the box alongside a faster secondary drive and a bigger battery alongside a magnesium chassis.

Battery life depends on whether you opt for G-Sync however

The Workhorse (AMD-powered custom desktop)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X | GPU: MSI X Trio GeForce RTX 2070S | RAM: XPG Spectrix D60G 32GB DDR4-3200 | Storage: 512GB XPG SX8200P + 2TB 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda Compute | OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro

The Portable Workstation (Apple MacBook Pro 16" 2021)

SoC: Apple M1 Max (8+2 core CPU w/ 32-core GPU) | RAM: 32GB unified LPDDR5 | Storage: 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD | OS: macOS Monterey

The Communicator (Apple iPhone 13 Pro)

SoC: Apple A15 Bionic | RAM: 6GB LPDDR4X | Storage: 128GB internal w/ NVMe controller | Display: 6.1" 2532x1170 "Super Retina XDR" OLED with VRR at up to 120Hz | OS: iOS 15.1

Probably just the default 60hz, 1080p IPS.

I have an AW15 with the 60hz G-Sync 1080p panel, it's an excellent choice. The only thing I will warn against with the Alienware is they often have overheating issues and require some tinkering to make them work 100% which I personally think is ridiculous for such an expensive laptop. I've had to disassemble mine more times than I can count and have even had the entire heatsink assembly replaced to combat overheating. The last time I had it apart was to apply Kryonaut and that seems to have finally fixed the issue.

Just my experience and a warning. They may have fixed the overheating issues now since they are aware of the problem, but I highly doubt it.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.
