removes most variables

No it doesn't, the 780 was overvolted while the 290 was not.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmLKAgEko3SAdHFtby1jNTFvaTF2UHhaMzdMQ0FNM2c&usp=sharing

In fact the 780 overclocked just as well as an over-volted 780 lightning

while the 290 overclocked worse than a reference r9 290 with arctic accelero xtreme.

Metrop is right Linus promised that all cards were pushed to their max but that was not true because that R9 290 can be over-volted from 1.18v to 1.36v but was not.

In that case a 290 beats a 780 Ti in an Nvidia optimized game.

It doesn't work like that, you can overclock a 7970 to make it outperform a GTX 780 that doesn't mean a 7970 is naturally faster than a 780.

You have to test both cards fairly. Overclocking the 780 significantly more than the 290 and then deducting that it's faster is just stupidity especially since the 290 still has plenty of headroom.

In any case APOLOGIES to the OP for hijacking the thread.

Keep in mind overvolting a 290/290x will add even more heat, and even where it was with normal voltage it was still nearly 10 Celsius warmer. For the price the 780 is a better choice over the 290. Especially with all the features nVidia offers (I swear to God if you bring up mantle... there is no proof of Mantle so at this point in time it's a useless argument till we can see it in action)
